My teaching style is one which engages the student actively in the learning process. I have used the "popcorn" technique in a classroom, where I call out "popcorn", then call on someone at random. This ensures that each student in the class is following, or else they lose their turn to read. If I'm working w/ a student w/ poor reading skills, I allow them to read, and help them w/ the difficult words, encouraging them to sound out the word. I also try to engage models, and kinestetics, in the learning process. One picture=1,000 words, and one model = 1,000 pictures. I also use these techniques in teaching mathematics. In college, I was a peer tutor in Math, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry. I have sub-taught for CUSD 5, and CUSD 87, for 3 years. I like working with grade-school students, but I like best a variety of teaching situations. That for me truly represents the challange of teaching. Only a diversity of students can bring learning to itself, reveal the demands of cognition for what they are. As a philosophy PhD this interests me very much. I have been teaching for 25 years. I began as a high-school teacher, taught grade school and special education, and then spent 20 years as a university professor of English and philosophy. I started tutoring as a graduate student and have been doing it on and off now for 20 years.

I am earning my BS in Business Administration and have gained an understanding in many areas of computer technology, arithmetic, English, and science. As an older sister, I have helped tutor my younger sister in mathematics, sciences, and arithmetic. I have a love for teaching with younger children.
