I have taught and tutored at my church and in other volunteer programs since high school. I also currently give drum lessons at a Stephen's Music Company.

I do not like to tell my students the answers, inhibiting them from thinking things through. I try to find different ways of teaching material in order to keep them motivated, as well.

My experience has taught me that learning is a co-operative exercise. I strive to push my students and myself beyond our “comfort zones” and approach new problems and concepts by applying basic scientific principles and sound experimental designs with the objective of devising novel solutions.
I have twenty years of industrial research experience in the surface and interfacial properties of both inorganic/organic and polymeric materials. I am a tenacious problem solver and owe much of my success to the relationships that I have developed with academic and industrial colleagues, and the co-operative education and intern students that have worked with me. My objective as a teacher is to not only impart knowledge, but also make the students understand the concepts of the subject. Based on my experience,it is my belief that students can accomplish more than they believe they can. My task is to encourage them to take the intellectual risks that are fundamental for their success. In order to accomplish this, I try to empower students as much as possible by making them active participants in their own education. I hope to foster critical thinking, facilitate the acquisition of life-long learning skills, and prepare students to function effectively to develop problem-solving strategy. Generally, I believe the role of a teacher is to be a facilitator, teachers should enable students to become responsible for their own learning. I do recognize that students learn in different ways and are committed to the learning process.

I have earned two BS degrees, one in Chemistry and one in Spanish as well as a Masters of Science in Forensic Science. In addition, I have learned extensive grammatical skills due to writing research papers and laboratory reports, along with essays in many areas. Since high school, I have tutored students in chemistry, Spanish, and mathematics. With my current job, I have gained excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex subjects on a level that an average person can understand.
I enjoy tutoring and mentoring students. It is very rewarding to be able to help a student understand concepts that at first may seem complex. I do not believe negative criticism can help a child learn; I like to encourage students. I believe it is best to break complex subject matter into parts and master smaller concepts in order to better understand the full picture.

First I would like to get to know the student and parents, focusing mainly on the student's interests and goals as well as how they feel about the particular subject they will be tutored in. After that I would have the student show me where they currently are in class and what they need help with. Then, depending on the particular circumstances, I would create a plan to get the student caught up and self-sufficient as quickly as possible.
