My comments on tutoring Shakespeare : In an Independent Study course taken at the post-graduate level, I focused exclusively on the works of William Shakespeare.

I am foremost a writer whose 38-year, award-winning career is rooted in journalism. However, I also have an extensive teaching background. I have taught writing labs at St. Thomas University – Miami, Florida (1987-88), Mississippi State University (1988-89) and Texas A&M University (1989-93); and I currently offer tutoring services to 10th- and 11th-grade foreign exchange students from all over the world. Some of my tutoring involves preparing students to take the college-entrance SAT. I am particularly qualified to do this from a writing perspective, because the College Board contracts me each year to assess the essays students submit as part of their SAT testing. Reading, Writing, and More

I have no set style of teaching. I try to understand how to benefit the individual by examining their needs. Then, we go from there. Some students need an analytical approach, so the material can best be presented as a formula. Others need a creative approach. It really just depends on the student.
I have a Bachelors in English Literature w/a certificate in Technical Writing from the University of North Texas. I have put myself through school by working as server part-time. This has given me a great deal of patience. I have experience as an office manager for an apartment locator, and I have tutored my friends through their English courses.

Unorthodox is the best way to describe my teaching style. Unorthodox in that I will change my approach or activities based on student comprehension. Unorthodox in that I truly believe that for every student who is confused or doesn’t understand a concept, there is a teacher who didn’t do their job. My greatest strength lies in creating lessons and activities where students will want to engage. Engagement leads to a permanent investment. A third generation teacher, working with kids is in my blood. In college, many teachers and peers commented on my ability to break down a large or complicated issue into manageable, easy-to-digest ideas. Now, as I tackle scary grammar issues or the dense analysis of irony in a plot, I thrive on the "lightbulb" look on my students' faces when I have finally made something click. I tend to keep my instruction child-focused, rather than just performing a lesson; if their head, hearts, and hands are not involved in the learning, I don't feel confident the lesson will last.
