My teaching style is to have a set of problems made up for the students to observe as examples to help understand certain chapters. I will assign additional problems if needed and focus on the subject matter that is the hardest for the individual to understand.
I have taken statistics and gotten an A in the course and still have all course materials to give a general overview of statistics and how to use SPSS. The single most important thing about being a teacher or mentor is to be respectful, socially aware, and sensitive. Okay, that's three things, but they kind of go together. The second most important thing about being a mentor is to create understanding about the underlying principle of whatever it is he or she is learning about. Once you understand the underlying principle, the "how to" stuff becomes a *lot* easier to understand and remember.
