I have taught private violin lessons for ten years to students ranging in age from 4-26. At the University of Alabama, I taught the lab component to Intro into Biology for Non-majors under Dr. Tom Graham and histology under Dr. Jane Rasco. Through the years I have tutored school-age children in all subjects, although I specialize in tutoring math and science. All of my pupils have shown improvement in their scores, with one particular case bringing a failing grade to a C in one reporting cycle.
I prefer a hands-on approach, especially with science and math. I believe an education is more than memorizing definitions but understanding and being able to apply concepts broadly. I truly enjoy teaching math and enjoy watching the 'click' when a student begins to understand the concepts. I believe many students have been erroneously convinced that "they don't get math" or that math is too hard. I believe in not just working through the problems at hand but in trying to help each student gain a better understanding of the thinking process involved in solving problems. I happened to be the only tutor who checked a box saying I could help high school students, and therefore worked with every family who called the college looking for a math tutor.
