As one of the few women to be admitted to a well known university in China, based upon my academic abilities, I was chosen to teach University students in the foreign language department for one and one half years. In the past twelve years I have worked in the International Banking arena for foreign and domestic banking institutions. During this time I advanced through the banking ranks to supervisor positions dealing with the various banking laws of each country wherein international transactions were processed on a daily basis. All students can learn, but in different ways. I, for one, learn best by watching how something is done. I can read about it, or hear a lecture about it, but seeing it helps me understand the subject. This type of teaching would be done with movies, drawing or acting out the situation. In my teaching, I try to use all methods available to me to help the students learn and to use their creativity. I especially try to get students to work in groups and to share their work with each other. I find that pier groups provide the best help in understanding the subject matter. The classroom should be a learning place of activities and fun.

One of the key elements of tutoring is communication between the tutor and student. Encouraging discussion instead of lecturing of the subject is important. Facilitating good rapport allows me to understand a student’s strengths and weaknesses and allows focus on the weak areas. For example, does the student primarily utilize rote memorization or is he/she capable of a higher level of critical thinking? Someone who is more familiar with memorization as a way of learning can be taught to expand their understanding of the subject if the right questions are asked to them. Someone that demonstrates higher critical thinking skills might do better with repetitive exercises on the subject which encourages focus and application.

A Little Bit About Me...

While I pride myself on being approachable, patient and easy going, I tend to approach teaching in a methodical manner. I believe that student's time and attention is very valuable, and warrants preparation and thoroughness. My initial approach is always to first assess a student's needs, goals, learning style, and accomplishments. Next, I pick a strategy to approach the needs of the student. For example, I might select a straight-forward text or document from which I could teach loosely, such as the book "With Good Reason". (It is an excellent text on argumentative methods.) Editing and reworking methods eventually becomes paramount. I am available to help students electronically. This is a style currently 'in vogue' at my university, espoused by my professors. Students can really benefit from the focused attention it can provide.
