I believe that the best way for a tutor to assist the student is to adapt to the individual’s learning style. We all have different approaches to learning and identifying which method maximizing your understanding of the topic helps to not only gain insight into difficult concepts, but furthermore increases your interest in the subject being taught. I recognize that students have different learning styles. As such, I am very careful to explain ideas in a way that best fits with the student's preferred learning style. And I only proceed to new material once I know the student is comfortable with the current material. This requires patience as well as the ability to convey math topics from multiple perspectives.
