Academic Associates Reading Center

I believe all students can become successful readers with positive, engaging instruction.
I am am a certified Reading Instruction Specialist and former fourth grade teacher. Most students rise 2-4 grade levels in under 50 hours of instruction using the Academic Associates Reading Program. The Academic Associates curriculum is a 13 lesson brain-based phonics curriculum. One of my favorite success stories is a student I'll call Mark. After completing only 7 lessons, Mark went from a 1.9 reading level to a 3.5 reading level. Because of his previous struggles in reading, the school he attended planned to retain him in the second grade. After only 2 months of instruction, the school called his mother to let her know that he would not be retained because of the remarkable improvement in his reading. Many students struggle with relationships and well as their academics. I believe in creating a safe, nuturing environment were a student is able to work at his own pace, at his own level, and feel a bond with his teacher. Setting realistic and obtainable goals with the student is a key factor to success. Measuring and documenting progress allows student, teacher, and family to see a visual record of growth. Addressing multiple intelligences and multiple learning styles are essential for struggling students. Finding a student's best mode of learning increases self-esteem and time on task.

During high school, my teacher requested that I help others in my class and I realized how much I loved helping others understand how accounting works. Also in helping my children with their school work, I have learned that each child is different and learns in different ways. I would describe my style of teaching as finding out how a particular student learns best and work form that foundation. Some learn better by seeing an example and then working it out on their own with someone to consult if they get stuck. Other learn better with what they hear and others what they read.
