All learning starts with a question, both by teacher and student alike. My role is both as teacher (coach and guide) and student (questioner). I should employ a variety of questioning techniques to better understand strengths and weaknesses, then prescribe remedies tailored for individual strengths and weaknesses, facilitating the learning process and desired outcome. Most people know intuitively how they learn, as well as which modalities work best for them. As a Training Coordinator for service-learning projects throughout Florida, I learned about the effectiveness of service-learning strategies. The opportunity to apply what is learned in classroom settings promotes retention of all subjects. In one project, students learned about homelessness in Palm Beach County, Florida and throughout the United States. Students empowered themselves when they spearheaded a food drive and conducted an assessment of homeless people in Palm Beach County. This process enriched their empathy for people in need. The most rewarding moment in my teaching career involved Emily, a college student who suffered an injury, leaving her with severe short term memory problems. She had great difficulty learning new math concepts. We could work on the same, problem over and over again and she wouldn’t remember completing it once, let alone a dozen times. I learned that word-for-word repetition was the best way to move ideas from Emily’s short term memory to her long term memory.
