A Little Bit About Me...

I am a retired engineer who has been substitute teaching for about 4 years including several long term positions. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and a MS in teaching with addition coursework in Electrical Engineering and Math. My tutoring experience started in Adirondack Community College’s math lab where I was helping a wide variety of students get through their math classes.
I try to adapt my teaching style to the student. I keep trying different methods until we find what works best. This is probably why many of my students have told me that I am great at explaining things so they understand it. It is important for the student to keep his or her view of the problem and to work off of that view, rather than to change the view to the teachers. I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. If a student is failing to learn, it is less often the material itself and more often the way it is being presented.
