Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I started tutoring in my teens helping young children with Autism Spectrum Disorders develop English and Math skills as well as speech therapy and public speaking. I tutored my fellow students while attending Carroll Community College in English 101 and 102 as well as Creative Writing. I then moved on to being a one on one with high school students with special needs in the Baltimore area.

I adjust to the student/learner as I am told or discover their learning preferences. However, in my experience and research, I have noticed that active learning and discovery-based learning are arguably most effective mechanisms for knowledge retention. I belief that conceptual understanding is the foundation of learning. Teaching kids to solve a specific problem that they can't do doesn't accomplish much, in my opinion. Going back to the concept and helping them really understand what is going on, either physically or mathematically, will not only help them with the problem they have, but give them a basis for future knowledge.

I graduated from a Pennsylvania Systems of Higher Education college with a B.S. in Mathematics and a minor in Physics.
