I understand first hand that not everyone learns the same way. I was labeled as “not too bright” as a child. The issue wasn’t my intelligence, it was my learning style. When I am working with someone on a new task/lesson, I try to find out what their learning style is, and then adapt my teaching style to it.

I have been a Junior High Math teacher for more than 20 years.I also have taught returning Empire State College students in Basic Math and electronics. In my last position, I created "Striving for Excellance in Math". It was a combination of daily and weekly drills and activities. I currently am working for EVI. They score all of the NYS Assessment exams. I therefore know what is required to exceed the standards required by NYS. I have also taught Math9,Course 1,and Math A. Before earning a BA in Biology at Skidmore College and after graduating high school, I took three years off to play hockey. Concurrently, I enrolled in classes at Mount Wachusett Community College in Massachusetts and tutored in the math department. I tutored students in algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and some calculus. At Skidmore I continued in math, taking calculus I, II, and III, and linear algebra before focusing my attention on molecular biology. Most of my experience comes from tutoring my younger siblings in math and science. In high school, I tutored my younger peers to do well on their regents exams. I was the valedictorian of my high school and I got 5's on many of my AP exams. I graduated college summa cum laude with a BS in Human Biology. The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.
