For the past 30 years, I have worked with special needs students. I believe that students learn at their educational level. The problem with education today, is that students are often in classrooms that stress learning at their frustration level. Many students are in general ed settings, but are forced to use materials that they do not fully understand. In my role as a teacher consultant, I adapted materials so the students could understand it. If chosen as a tutor, I would do the same so the students would learn at their education level. I attended two colleges for my undergraduate work: Manchester College and IUPUI. My degree in English is from IUPUI, where I participated in the publication of the campus literary magazine and a capstone thesis project. At Manchester, I wrote for the newspaper staff, co-founded the Literary Club, and helped produce the literary magazine. I have one year of Master's work from the University of Indianapolis, but have not earned an MA yet. I write every day and have excellent editing skills, from structural editing to copyediting. My teaching style would be to find the student's primary learning style and converting the information he or she needs into a format that fits that learning style. Each subject would be made as visible or concrete as possible, so that the student could interact with the material on more than just a visual/conceptual level. Showing the student how the material can relate to real-life situations and opportunities would be a vital part of the instruction. I graduated from my high school with honors. I have been in College since two weeks after graduating high school, where I am slowly pursuing a career in Nursing while working full time at the Dow Chemical Company.
