Literature is one of my top subjects! I have a strong passion for literature. I scored in the top 90th percentile on the Kapstone senior exit exam for Literature. I am proficient in areas from Chaucer and the middle ages, to Shakespeare, early to contemporary British Literature. My area of special interest is American Literature. I am extremely well read in Southern and Appalachian Literature as well as American Literature from the 1930s.

I have been tutoring both peers and high school students during my stay at Lincoln Memorial University. Students regularly asked me to proofread their papers, and parents frequently contacted me for help with high school students senior research papers. I have made consistent A's in all of my English classes, and I currently hold a Bachelors degree in English.

I have training in the Balanced Literacy program in which the word study, reading objectives, and writers' workshop are combined in a one and a half hour block of student driven, teacher facilitated activities. These are ultimately shared in a whole group and or one on one setting. When tutoring, I do a very brief mini lesson on the objective and we go immediatley into the task at hand with instant feedback and adaptation between the reader or writer and myself as we progress through the lesson. If the student is hung on vowel digraphs, we stop and examine those and do word work with several examples. My next choices for them to read would have more vowel digraphs. If my student is confused about where to put the punctuation in a quotation, we will do several real world scenerios where he will write statements, questions, and exclaimations correcting as we go along. I am a discussion based teacher. I prefer to engage the students higher level thinking with a questioning approach. I do not think that lecture or rote memorization are proper ways to educate a child. I believe that teachers affect a students learning not just through the subject but also through the real world examples that should be the core of all learning. Students will only reach their potential when they are challenged beyond what they feel they are capable.
I am blessed to have attended a college that prepared me for real world situations and classroom circumstances. I have achieved two bachelor's degrees, a BS in bible and a BS in elementary education.
