Since retirement six years ago I have been tutoring and coaching my son, who is handicapped. He is highly intelligent but learns a little bit differently, so I have worked hard with him to teach him to read, learn math and grammar. He cannot write, so everything he learns is by memory. I believe that children are born smart. Some of them have special learning challenges and some have been taught to believe that they are not smart. By treating children as though they are intelligent and providing encouragement and learning opportunities, I have seen children grow and progress in almost astonishing ways. The sparkle in a child's eyes when they finally "get it" is the best paycheck.
After finishing my Masters Degree in Education I taught one year in a private school then opened my own business tutoring primarily homeschool students during the school year. The students I have worked with are primarily ages 11-18, but my experience with my own children includes the primary grades. I graduated from Hampshire College with a degree in Anthropology and Photography. These degrees required rigorous researching including an intensive semester of independent field study. My field study culminated in a 70 page thesis and correlated gallery exhibition. In addition, I have extensive experience composing and organizing shorter research papers on variety of subjects and laboratory reports. The bachelor degree that I earned in Business Management required a substantial academic effort on my part. Writing the essays, business evaluations and case studies was at times overwhelming to me but I was able to complete them in a satisfactory manner.
