I have been tutoring for over 8 years. I have also started youth tutoring programs since 2007. I have taught algebra, organic chemistry, physics, and other core mathematics and chemistry classes. Although I have taught in group settings, I prefer to tutor no more than three students at a time. I have taught grades from 6th grade all the way up to sophomore college level.
I use the preferences, hobbies, likes, and dislikes of the student to relate the information in which they are learning. I use examples from everyday life that helps them understand information that is applicable to everyday life.

'Retired' Biologist and Experienced Math Tutor

I have been teaching molecular biology to students and technicians in the laboratory for the past 12 years. In college I taught the human anatomy laboratory and a special research section to other undergraduates. I also tutored fellow students in College Algebra. I am currently tutoring students in math to prepare them for the GED.
I believe my job as a tutor is to find a way to help every student learn. I tell all my students if they don't understand the material, then I have to find another way to explain it. I believe anyone can learn math and science when the teaching is tailored to the students learning style.I will take the time to find the best learning style for your student and assign useful homework assignments. If your student is willing to work hard there is nothing we can't accomplish together.

Over several years as a teacher, tutor, and teaching assistant I have had the privilege of refining my teaching strategy. For example, as a physics tutor, I coached a high school senior who was intimidated with the subject how to master it using a simple reproducible foundation. I have also life changing testimonials other science subjects. My academic achievements include PhD in biology and a BS with a joint Chemistry with Physics degree. I am always fascinated at the prospect of permanent uplifting a student's.
I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter. If not, I will guide them in discovering a useful one using their existing models and their preferred input mode (tactile, visual, etc.). If a ... read more

As an educator and a biologist, I am continually striving to excite students’ interests in the unknown. I also work constantly to instill proper study habits in my students, allow them to learn using their eyes, hands, and ears, and approach each topic with the proper amount of guidance, attention, and enthusiasm it deserves. Moreover, I believe that children should be shown how solutions are achieved; students should be given the tools to complete academic tasks, not merely have those tasks done for them. With that being said, I believe my extensive experience from teaching science gives me the ability to provide students with the tools needed to learn and discover their hidden abilities to be as smart as they desire.

I have a direct and simple teaching method. I love teaching physics and it always came naturally to me but I understand that most people do not feel the same way. I try to help students gain a deep understanding of the subject matter so that the principles and concepts are learnt and not simple formula memorizing. I do this so that when the student comes across a problem that does not fit the general shape of previous problems they can use the concepts learned to solve the problem. In short I try to teach problem solving and not rote learning in my subjects.
I have been tutoring, mentoring and teaching students over the last 5 years in Physiology, Physical Fitness, and Physics. I have taught online, one on one and in a classroom setting. I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas.
I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught.

All who wish to learn have but to ask for help. I believe anyone can learn anything they want and that no one deserves to be told otherwise. In tutoring math, the individual needs to have their homework present and, if available, old/recent tests so they may learn from the past as well as the present. Math adds unto itself, so understanding previous rules and equations are necessary for applying them to future classes. Once the basics are covered properly, seeing to the need for current classes will become much easier and enjoyable. I tutor by example, or refining what has been taught, in such a way that the individual can understand math in day to day events, or how its applied to his/her interests.
Though I am a student of Biotechnology, helping others in the field of mathematics has been of interest in that its a common “language” worldwide. Prior to completing my General ... read more

I have degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech. I have spent 18 years in mentoring, supervising, and leading others in technical manufacturing. Most recently, I am teaching middle and high school science -- 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th. This includes physical science, biology, chemistry & physics.
I am an optimist in the classroom. All kids can learn but only if they want to and the proper language is used to communicate. I use an encouraging, cooperative method to gradually uncovering the essence of the plan. I will not move on until they 'get it'. This may mean using various analogies throughout the lesson in order to take the knowledge and pass it on to the students. I feel hands on is very valuable in accelerating the ' getting it' part.
