When I approach a student I've never worked with, my first priority is to make them feel comfortable by letting them see that I am a very nice, friendly, and compassionate person that they might like to have as a friend. Next I try to get them to tell me about themselves in some way (what they've been working on, their favorite subjects) to try to encourage them to speak freely with me about what they're thinking. Then, after personal rapport is established, I begin my academic approach to tutoring by finding out how they think based on their interests or common themes, and I try to connect the material to these things. I have been tutoring since I was 13 years old. Parents of my peers always approached me to teach their son or daughter. After I completed high school with a 4.0 GPA I was hired at a professional tutoring school. There I worked for nearly 10 years with a loyal student base many of whom I taught the entire time. I taught kids from when they were in elementary school all the way until high school. Some students were ineligible to go to normal school so I was their only teacher for years. In that time I managed to get these students up to 4 years ahead in certain subjects like math and science. I love teaching adolescents. I think it is very fulfilling to watch a child obtain knowledge. I have a very hands-on teaching style. I like to work through all the problems and questions that the children have. I pride myself on using unique examples to explain complex problems and concepts.
In my last year of college I chose to complete my field placement research project at an accelerated junior high school for low income families. At this school I was in charge of the after-school science club. I helped the adolescents learn aspects of science they wouldn't learn in the classroom.
