I earned Glenn County Teacher of the Year in 1998 and Tehama County Teacher of the Year in 2007. I was also named Glenn County Teacher of the Week for Channel 7 News in 1999. From 1992 to 1996 I trained in study skills for the History and Geology departments at Chico State through the Equity Services Office. I always try to be very patient and supportive when I'm tutoring. I am a strong believer in the Socratic method of teaching, which from my understanding, means asking the student questions regarding what they already know about a concept in order to customize the lesson and/or "lead" them to the answer. I also try to use analogies and real life examples that are tailored according to the interests of my student. For example, if my student is interested in sports, then I try to use sports analogies and examples to describe difficult concepts. I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach. I think that it is important to make sure that the student understands the concepts being learned in each subject rather than learning how to do one particular problem. Too often students forget the basics that they learned before because they thought that they were finished only to find that it comes up again in a more advanced subject. My goal is to get students to understand and apply the concepts to different situations other than the ones that are directly in front of them at the moment. I tend to push students to work hard and challenge them to think about the process instead of just giving answers.
