I do what I do ~ because I love who I work with!

I am the Site Coordinator for READING PALS at Paradise Elementary School. I've been working daily at Paradise Elementary for over 3 years as a Volunteer Reading Instructor. I also worked one summer for the Northern California Burn Foundation as a Counselor and Quartermaster at Camp. Working with severely burned children was one of the most rewarding times in my life.
Most of the teaching staff and 90% of the students know me as Mr.John. They know and respect me as someone who takes his time to mentor through friendship. I instill a desire in each student to improve incrementally, each at their own speed, with a focus on learning new words, and their meaning, everyday. You will always see a Dictionary on my reading table. I strive to make learning fun! "How many different ways can I teach a concept?" is the mentality I use when working with students. Every student learns in his/her own unique way. Being creative, adaptive, and fun are essential. I live for that "ah-ha moment" where everything clicks. It's no secret that we succeed in the things that we love doing. I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach. During High School I taught at a science camp for 3 years. After college I went and lived in China and taught university level ESL for 3 years. I have worked for a few local tutoring organizations in the last 2 years as well as doing private tutoring.
