As a tutor, I find that it is important to present the material to the students in a way that they can relate to. My job as an educator is to teach them how to learn it and make them want to learn it. I personally do not believe that negative reinforcement is beneficial. Positive responses to students are extremely valuable, even if they may occasionally give the wrong answer. This will give them the motivation to do well. My philosophy is that teaching is part knowledge, part communication, and part intuition. My intuition is necessary to understand where a student is getting stuck. I myself already understand the material; the challenge is to understand why a student does not. A variety of communicative teaching approaches is best. I have learned that different students respond to visual, auditory, or tactile methods. As always, continuous practice is extremely important. I also must ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

For four years I taught in private schools, where I gave instruction at the middle and high school levels in English, French, Hebrew, computer programming, and office applications (spreadsheets, etc). I taught Math and English for one year at a Huntingdon Learning Center (elementary through high school students). Prior to this I taught French and Linguistics courses at the State University of NY at Albany where I earned a degree in each of those fields. Later I became a database administrator. Today I develop web applications in the C# programming language and the Transact SQL query language. I have also given private music lessons over the years to a total of 20 to 30 students. I play guitar, trumpet, a little piano, and I sing.
I have always told my classes, "Learning can be fun; and if it's not, you may not be doing it right." Of course, that does not mean learning is ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy enabling students to discover the abilities within themselves. I excel at being able to get students to find answers to their struggles by asking them the right questions, leading them in the right direction instead of doing the work for them. I have an uncanny ability to see the best in all students, patience, understanding, and flexibilty are virtues in tutoring. Each student is unique and needs an individual style of assistance. A solid educational foundation provides the confidence to reach goals, my desire is to help studetns dream bigger by showing them the true reaches of their potential.
At the age of 24 already possessing a bachelor's and master's degree illustrates my efficiency and determination. I have taught English as a second language at the high school level and politcal science at the university level. I am very personable and able to relate to various typ ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As the daughter of educators, I have been exposed to the education system all my life. As a result of this exposure, I became very interested in tutoring and teaching. I taught for two years as a substitute teacher before attending law school. I previously worked as a substitute teacher with Morrow Elementary in North Lauderdale, Florida where I taught test-taking strategies for the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test. Most recently, I have volunteered with Youth Encouragement services as a tutor.
Based on previous experience I have discovered that the same teaching style does not work for every child. I find that explaining each topic and asking the child question gives a clear indication of their understanding. Based on responses to the questions adjustments may be made to address each child's need.

A Little Bit About Me...

My excellent writing skills, ACT score of 35, and passion for academics got me into Vanderbilt University, from which I acquired my BA in 2009. I studied every subject I could but found most pleasure in political science and sociology. In addition to these fields, I have expertise in grammar, essay composition, and a variety of creative arts. I also have teaching knowledge of the basic maths and sciences. Overall, I have about three years of teaching and mentoring experience in my repertoire.
I believe that when a student does not do well in school, it is not because that student cannot learn. Different teaching methods speak to different students, and sometimes a student simply needs a fresh and alternative introduction to subject material. My job as a tutor is to find the teaching method that speaks most clearly to my student. By being patient, precise, persistent, and knowledgea ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Most high school students don't get the chance to teach their own geometry classes. With our teacher in the back of class, I lectured from the book, guided my peers’ board work, and answered their questions. Since then I have incorporated training and education in everything that I do. As a manger in two very different industries, I succeeded in delivering exceptional production and service by training my teams and giving them opportunities to become accountable for their performances. While a graduate sociology student, I jumped at the special invitation to adjunct for a semester in addition to my teaching assistant duties and found it to be even more rewarding than I imagined. During both of my graduate programs, I found that guiding study sessions and offering a variety of tutoring assistance and training (such as three languages, history, philosophy, fitness) became central to my suc ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My college education was very self driven and self propelled. I received three academic scholarships throughout my college career and maintained a 3.84 GPA for the entire four years. At the close of my four years, I earned a BS is History, giving me a particularly good foundation in the humanities and English composition. I did hundreds of pages of research writing in my major, and maintained a very high level of excellence in all subjects, proving proficiency and diligence. I carried this knowledge and self-discipline over to tutoring young people, particularly young people with learning disabilities. I have tutored students in Mathematics, English, the arts, Science, and social sciences.
Teaching is a very holistic activity. I spent the last year and a half working with at-risk kids in a wilderness setting as a Counselor/Teacher. Essentially, I had 8-10 home-schooled children und ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As my experience at college drew to a close, I found that the most rewarding activities I participated in were centered on education. I am a lifelong learner, and I love participating with others in the learning process. I set a relaxed atmosphere that fosters the students drive to ask questions and seek answers. I am comfortable with taking control of a session and speaking throughout (Lecture) or allowing the student to come up with their areas of difficulty and ask questions (Synthesis). I believe that educators frame the future of the young people they contact, and I want to help others as I have been helped in the past. I also would like the opportunity to learn by doing, and see if this field is the one for me.
As a college student, I was convinced early that I would become a doctor or scientific researcher. About halfway through my college career, I decided that while scienc ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a passion for children and a love for education. I strongly believe that every individual has a learning method that works best for them. I hope to help each child find their unique learning style that will allow them to excel in their education. One-on-one attention can make a world of a difference, by removing the distractions found within a classroom. Additionally, I firmly believe that learning should be fun and stimulating for the children. My teaching style strongly incorporates both individual learning styles and creative fun ideas for learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching has always come naturally to me. As a young teenager, I began helping younger siblings and neighborhood kids with their homework. As a mental health professional on an Adolescent Psychiatric Unit, I discovered that educating patients was far more empowering than implementing conventional Rogerian counseling techniques. In 1998 I began designing/facilitating classes on impulse control, assertiveness, and anger management. Ever since I have been teaching in alternative settings.
I firmly believe that teaching is about making meaningful connections that empower others. Therefore, I always try to first establish a comfortable rapport that is conducive to open communication. I then will determine the student's strengths/weaknesses and areas of highest interest. This allows me to develop individualized lessons that will be highly engaging and most effective at meeting the ... read more

Being a Chemistry major, I have exceptional knowledge in Science and Math. I have worked with children from Elementary to High School. I have tutored/taught highly intelligent children and some resource students. Working as a substitute teacher, I developed many techniques and strategies to get children to understand. While working at a Youth Development Center, I engaged with teenage girls whom were not interested in learning, but I was able to gain their attention and get them involved in the learning process. Many of these students, I helped prepare for the GED test, a test that I scored highly on myself.
All children grasp concepts in different ways and from different methods. I have gained experience on how to pin point a child's learning style and have learned how to become more effective by teaching at a child's pace and level of understanding. So, my teaching style is depe ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a mind motivator, I am the dynamic teacher that students need in their lives. I love integrating technology, (i.e. PowerPoint, video streaming and interactive games). I understand learning styles and have high expectation for all students. The importance of knowing what motivates students can help me hone in on what students need. I am a hands-on type of teacher, but students only learn by doing, therefore, the preparation of activities based on abilities and learning styles can help student move to the next level. These key components to learning help me plan lessons that are fun and motivational. Teachers should take the time to get to know their student’s needs so that they can build trust, and give the student the educational food that they are entitled to.
