I enjoy tutoring and working with children of all ages. Two concepts I consider most important are learning the basics and setting small goals towards the ultimate goal which is set with the student. I believe harder problems or concepts are understood if the basics are strong, and having goals is rewarding for both the student as well the tutor. I seek to develop the style of teaching that is most effective to the student. I truly think every child has a potential to succeed and I thrive to reach that potential.
My tutoring experience started while I was attending Valencia Community College, prior to my medical school training. I have taught mathematics in grades 3 through college. I especially enjoy working with high school students and college algebra and trigonometry students. Since my retirement from college teaching I have been tutoring at Sylvan Learning, teaching some grade school math, algebra, geometry and ACT prep.
I especially enjoy working one-on-one with students because I am able to concentrate on his/her weaknesses. I like to use manipulatives and concrete examples whenever possible. After introducing a concept I work out examples with the student, then have him/her work through several examples while I watch and, finally, have the student work independently on a set of problems. If there are still errors I try to approach the concept from a different perspective and then repeat the process.
