We see education as a meeting of minds, where every participant is on the same level. While a tutor may well have more knowledge of a subject than the student, learning is a communicative and collaborative process; the transmission of ideas can only happen when we acknowledge we each have something to learn from one another. Part of what makes Logic Studies so successful and distinctive is that we refuse to fall into the prescribed teacher-student dynamic. Never condescending and demonstrating mutual respect, the tutors at Logic Studies treat their students as peers, or coequals .

Graduate student looking to help students achieve their goals!

I think teaching styles should differ based on the preferred learning style of the student. The teaching style should play on the strengths and preferences of that particular student. That being said, I foster a student-centered approach to learning. This approach encourages the student play an equal, active role in the learning process, rather than a passive role. A cooperative approach is important so the student can feel like he or she is an active and capable participant in learning the material. I also believe in leading by example and allowing the student to use me as a resource for reviewing their work.
I have tutored children off and on since I was in high school. More recently, my time has been spent volunteering with The Giving Tree, where I tutored inner-city children after school and helped organize activities (museums, zoo, etc.) on the weekends. I am currently in the ... read more

Blueberry House; Preparing Today for a Successful Tomorrow

I have taught for 30 years. Five years ago I began tutoring when my daughter was diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder. I feel like I can do more as a tutor than a classroom teacher. My heart lies with these kids and I want to do everything I can to help make them a success. I create an individual course of study for each child based on their learning style. I help kids understand their homework and teach them how to study so they get more out of the time they are spending in their school work. I teach reading comprehension and fluency. My students typically see a two to three year jump in grade level after just a few hours of tutoring. I tutor children with ADD, dyslexia, sensory disorders, dysgrahia, autism, aspergers, and other learning disabilities. If you want only the best than call Blueberry House. As a biochemistry undergraduate student, I was selected to be an organic chemistry workshop leader. As a workshop leader, I meet with students on a weekly basis to complete difficult organic chemistry problems and answer any questions that they may have. In addition to the workshops, I was also asked to be a teaching assistant. As a teaching assistant, I work closely with professors to establish grading guidelines, and use my knowledge of organic chemistry to grade for a course of over 200 students.
I am very flexible in my teaching style, and delivery of information. Some students know exactly how they learn, while others are unsure. I will always adapt to an individuals learning style. Although it is sometimes difficult to determine how a student learns best, it is important to recognize these differences among individuals. It is my goal to make sure that each student leaves a tu ... read more

I have had experience in tutoring mathematics at local community colleges. I have also tutored chemistry, physics and many medical subjects informally. I have finished classwork in a medical program and have assisted with many classes, mostly in physiology related courses.
I enjoy tutoring, especially with motivated people. I have much experience in translating difficult academic problems to meaningful skills. I still don't have my times tables memorized but can demonstrate difficult fractions and imaginary numbers to others. My experience in laboratory, design and classroom settings allows me to illustrate complex concepts meaningfully. I enjoy working one-on-one to help facilitate deeper understanding. I would consider working with special needs children or those with learning disabilities.

I have found that fostering various learning styles is a key to allowing diverse populations of students to flourish in whole group, small group and individual learning situations. It is my belief that the foundation for creating a life-long learner of mathematics is to help them discover, through various modalities and the use of manipulatives (when appropriate), the underlying concept that allows the child to attach meaning to the numbers, symbols, shapes, etc. they encounter. I child will feel a sense of “ownership” for a mathematical concept when they can explain, in multiple ways, a mathematical procedure, pattern, relationship, etc.

My teaching philosophy is first to have the knowledge for the subjects. Then, I think you need to understand the youth learning styles and to find out where they are with their knowledge and then begin from there. Certainly some refreshing maybe necessary, but most of the time the youth is behind so the teaching would focus on helping them reach their potential and moving forward.
During the summers of college I was trained in Project Read and organizational skills. I then tutored youth from grade school to high school in math and science from grade school math to algebra and geometry the same for science. I worked with the teachers to determine when assignments were due and worked on planning with the students to plan out how and when to work on projects to complete them on time. Also, from 2000 to 2007 I was a youth advocate which involved teaching career readiness classes, tutor ... read more
