Recognizing my capability and talent I was given the opportunity to teach math and computers to high school students and also science and computers to all grade levels. I volunteer at the Short Pump Elementary School as a Math Helper and I am very comfortable using the Promethean Board. Twice in 2 consecutive years I reached to the final round of awards as the best teacher of the year who showed innovation in teaching by the Intel. I developed plans that assisted students who required individual attention with reading and math skills, as well as independent learners. I started out as a Computer Instructor and enjoyed teaching computer classes but something was missing. A Little Bit About Me...

I do not know what my teaching style is. I have instructed large groups and had one on one learning sessions as well. I have dominated the communication time and I have been a listener. I have out right provided examples and I have merely provided encouragement for a student to continue their thought process. I believe everyone learns differently and therefore it is important to be flexible. The main goal, after all, is not to see discover how great I am as a tutor; rather it is to see how much a student can gain and retain knowledge from a learning session.
I earned my BS in Chemistry with a GPA 3.57. I then took the GRE and ACS entrance exams for graduate school, I passed all four division with 20-60 percentile of the national avg. During my undergraduate education I was a tutor and earned level one training certification. In graduate school I instructed lab courses and tutored i ... read more

I have worked for one school year as a substitute for both Hanover County and Louisa County, I am Currently employed by Hanover County Public Schools as a teaching assistant while continuing my work on my graduate work. I will still be employed by hanover County Schools for the 2009-2010 School year.
I work well as a one on one special education aide because my attention is soley on the activities and education of my students. I am a laid back worker, and extremely patient because I find that if I allow myself to get out of shape, then I am not an effective teacher and aide, and my students will see this. I strive to be a good role model to them all, even when I may be frustrated but I find constructive ways of venting such as listening to music during class quiet times and taking walks with my students during activity breaks and while they are in PE.

A Little Bit About Me...

I was a corporate trainer for 3 years, followed by 12 years serving as a software instructor. Prior to and throughout this time, I also taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible school, teaching everyone from 2 year olds to adults. I spent one summer as a reading tutor, and many of my software classes have been 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. I have volunteered as an SOL coach and in Head Start classrooms.
When I teach reading, I convey my love of reading. When I teach math, I convey the logical beauty of math. When I teach other subjects, I stress the importance of the material and how it is relevant to everyday life. In Sunday school this week, we combined with another class, so there were people there who aren’t usually. Several of them thanked me and let me know how much they got out of it. My response is that I am a teacher. It’s who I am and what I do.

My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success.

I spent most of my career training adults. For the last two years I have been employed with Richmond City Public Schools as a Title I Math Tutor. Growing up, I had a family of educators to encourage me to strive to do my best. Tutoring in the Richmond City School system has given me the opportunity to tutor and encourage these students to strive for their best. I have found my niche because of my love for children combined with my desire see them succeed academically.
Knowing each child learns differently, an assessment of their progress based on test scores, observations and on-on-one tutoring, gives me the strategy I use to develop an individual plan. Some students work well in small groups and other need individual tutoring.
