I do not know what my teaching style is. I have instructed large groups and had one on one learning sessions as well. I have dominated the communication time and I have been a listener. I have out right provided examples and I have merely provided encouragement for a student to continue their thought process. I was a corporate trainer for 3 years, followed by 12 years serving as a software instructor. Prior to and throughout this time, I also taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible school, teaching everyone from 2 year olds to adults. I spent one summer as a reading tutor, and many of my software classes have been 1-on-1 tutoring sessions. I have volunteered as an SOL coach and in Head Start classrooms.
When I teach reading, I convey my love of reading. When I teach math, I convey the logical beauty of math. When I teach other subjects, I stress the importance of the material and how it is relevant to everyday life. My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success.
