A Little Bit About Me...

As an educator I have the opportunity to help my students find their strengths, build on them, and guide them on their future path. This opportunity can also be a challenge. It becomes my responsibility to rise to the challenge and be the person they say was important in shaping their future. I want to be prepared to help students recognize their strengths and how those apply to a profession, how to prepare for the transition from school to the workforce, the military, or college, and how to successfully embark on their post-school life.
I have been an educator for 23 years,as an elementary school teacher, and in special education at the secondary level. I have a master's degree in learning disabilities, and have worked on a Child Study Team for the past 14 years. I believe all children can learn if taught to their individual learning style. I love educating others and teaching others to teach themselves. I believe each one of us has a specific learning style that needs to be discovered and emphasized for maximum learning potential. The responsibility of an educator is to understand learning differences and make sure to use learning tools that best suites the student. Without this knowledge, many smart and capable children will be left behind and not given the resources they deserve. This is why I love the process of learning and learning how to be a learner!

Initially, I believe it is important to assess a student’s present levels. If I know at what level the student is functioning, I can then create a plan to improve the student’s skills. When I am working one-on-one with a student, I teach to the student’s strengths. I try to touch as many modalities as possible, making the concepts easier to understand and remember. I also believe it is important to build up the confidence of students by giving them opportunities for success. If students think they can be successful, learning difficult concepts becomes something that students are more comfortable trying.
After graduating with a BS in Special Education, I worked for almost six years as a high school Learning Support teacher. I taught and supported students in all subjects. I was fortunate enough to be home with my children for a few years before I started working as a substitu ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I received a B.S. Degree in Education with a teaching certificate in English-Communication, at the secondary level. I am also qualified to instruct younger children. My graduate work focused on elementary students. My experience with young children, was learning to identify reading disabilities, administering standardized reading tests, to assess the instructional and readiness levels of individual students. I have taught in a wide array of classroom settings and as a private tutor.
I strive to encourage open discussions, and small group activities so students can move around the room, but only as it relates to the task at hand. I enjoy watching their enthusiasm when I give a "fun" learning activity. I am pleasant, very patient and lively!
