My comments on tutoring English ESOL : I have successfully completed the Duval County ESOL training and I have taught ESOL students in high school.

I enjoy teaching and working with children. While I believe that all children can learn, they do so in their own ways and at their own pace. It is the tutor’s responsibility to ensure that the student(s) understand the material. It is important to show students how one idea builds on the last. I will help your child learn the material in his/her own way. I consider myself to be patient, non-judgmental, and knowledgeable of the subject matter. I truly believe all children can meet their potential if they are given the appropriate surroundings and learning experiences. I am very proud of the kind letters of thanks that I have received from parents of some of my students this year.

My comments on tutoring English ESOL : I am a qualified ESOL instructor.

I have always been a teacher. I taught swimming when I was 14 and French to fifth graders when I was in high school. I love working in education. I believe that all people, young and old, can learn and reach their potential. My teaching style is calm and patient. I have a good sense of humor and am creative. However, I have high expectations for my students and for myself. I find joy in learning and believe that teaching allows me to share this joy.
I have been a teacher for 40 years. I retired because family care-giving required my full attention. My studies prepared me to teach and my experience prepared me to meet the needs of each student. I am experienced in all areas of Language Arts; reading, writing, grammar and literature as well as elementary math, history, psychology and the arts. English ESOL is one of my top subjects! This is the subject of preference for me. I am TESOL certified, and have been teaching as an ESL/EFL teacher for 3 years in schools in China, and for another accumulated 3 years online as a tutor. I find ESL/EFL teaching to be fun and rewarding. Using my degree in English Literature, TESOL certification, and a large library of teaching materials I can provide fun and interesting classes which make learning English easier.

I extensively use music, video, flashcards and activities to make my clases fun and interesting. Discussion, and even newspaper articles can be supplemented as class materials. Classes are tailored to fit the needs and level of the student. I always keep my classes upbeat and moving forward. The proper amoount of review is mixed into the new material so everything remains fresh, not forgotten.
From 2002 through 2010 I served as an Adult leader for the BSA through which I taught subjects ranging from life skills (cooking, sewing, personal care, etc) to government (political structure, citizenship, etc.) to outdoor survival(fire making, edible plant recognition, swimming, etc.) Also, from 2004 through 2012, I served as a safety trainer and risk management trainer for two different employers. The majority of my teaching incorporated teaching to visual, auditory AND kinesthetic learners, as my classes had a variety of learners. The majority of my learners liked the hands on experience and visual grammatical lessons. I am considerate of students feelings and have the best success with tutoring the struggling students with one on one lessons. I know all students can learn if their basic needs are met. My greatest accomplishments in life have been with teaching teenagers and showing them my interest in them with respect and compassion.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a stay-at-home mother of three children for the past 22 years. When my children were young, I regularly volunteered in their classroom, worked on the PTA and taught Sunday School. I also volunteered on a regular basis at Rosie's Place, a homeless shelter for women in Boston, MA and also at the Transition House, a shelter for battered women and children in Cambridge, MA.
I love working with children and am convinced that if young students get the attention they need as their skills are developing, they will have much more success in school in the years to come. I believe that the experience I've had working with my own children will help me be able to reach out to struggling students that are assigned to me. I know that each child has his own learning style, and I am patient and would work hard to help that child achieve success.

More About This Tutor...

I believe the key to teaching is communication. Building a connection between myself and the student has always been a cornerstone of my pedagogical style. I believe that most students have the potential to succeed, and that my role as an instructor is to help them to teach themselves -- which is the essence of real learning.
My first instructional experience was when I was 8; I taught my cousin how to read. From there, I went on to tutor as an undergrad and to teach while in graduate school. I have missed the one-on-one aspect of tutoring, and am especially able to help with English, but can work in other areas as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

I try to relate well to and form good relationships with my students. I have learned through my own experiences and through UCF, various teaching styles; however, the most important element in my style is to listen and to adjust to each child and listen to his/her needs. I want them to understand the importance of the material and why they are learning it. I use a lot of positive reinforcement.
I have been teaching/tutoring since I was 15 years old. Throughout high school I taught Sunday school and tutored. For a year in college I tutored at a day care center. I also volunteered with children with the Reading Buddies and Dream Center, a center for at-risk children. I taught school in the Netherlands for three months and served a semester at Joan Walker Elementary teaching kindergarten and third grade. Currently, I am teaching a fifth grade class of 28 students, 10 of whom are SLD.
