My comments on tutoring American History : Exploring all areas of American History, linking literature and drama to help students understand the concepts and events.

I'm very laid back, but I know how to get results. I have always been a very disciplined student, but I realized pretty early in my academic career that unless I make the subject interesting for me, I'll never grasp the material. I make it a point to get to know every student so that I can personalize their learning style. The only way they'll learn and understand something is if they WANT to do so. I offer a different approach to things that students may not get in the classroom, to hopefully expand their interest in a subject they never thought they'd like.
I recently obtained my Bachelor's Degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, where I graduated in the top of my class with a 4.0. I graduated with my undergraduate degree in marine biology in 2002 and then worked as a research biologist for two and a half years before returning to school to pursue my master’s degree. I believe that my hands-on scientific experiences combined with my academic background allow me to convey difficult concepts to students. As a researcher and as a student, I have had to put together many written and oral proposals and presentations, so I have the ability to communicate ideas very effectively. Each semester of my graduate school, I taught two science labs to non-science majors. This job provided me with experience in lecturing, preparing experiments, designing exams, and evaluating students. After my graduate work was completed, I began private tutoring in subjects such as Spanish, algebra, genetics, and social sciences.
I think the most useful tutor emphasizes critical thinking. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is friendly and approachable. I find putting a student at ease in the beginning allows them to open up to me in order for us to both find out how he or she learns best, especially since I feel learning styles vary for each individual and often differs for some subjects. For example, I may want to use pictures and art to explore history versus reading and lecture type presentations.
I have taught both college and AP High School for college credit in the areas of Humainties, Religious Studies and English composition at three different institutions. Though I do well in large classroom settings, I prefer more personalized instruction settings. I think I would make an excellent tutor in the areas of English Composition and Literature and World History on both the high school and college level, and would likely do quite well to tutor high school French.

I believe that anyone is capable of learning anything. I believe that it is up to the teacher to make the subject at hand interesting, and relate it to the real-world needs of the student. It is important to instigate an open dialogue, to understand the student to then formulate a plan that fits with the student's learning style. Open communication and patience are the cornerstone to getting any student to open up and begin the learning process. I have a passion for learning, would love to help any student become aware that learning can be fun and productive.
