I was more of an instructor than a teacher. I was a day camp counselor at Solway House parent/child resort in Saugerties N.Y. I instructed kids how to swim, dive, play various sports and gave dancing lessons to the guests. As a high school student I tutored 7th and 8th graders in an after school community center. I was one of a few staff at the University of Connecticut to instruct graduates and staff in the use of the various electronic facilites available to them.
I feel children are very self-aware and are very vulnerable to positive and negative feedback. Therefore, no matter how little progress is made, praise them. If no progerss is made or if an issue needs to re-addressed, praise them..."That was great, but let's try it this way!" I was the kid in the back of math class who was always drawing instead of paying attention. My early focus on the arts gave my parents a few gray hairs when report cards were issued but in the long run, that same focus has enabled me to build a very successful career. For the past seventeen years, I've worked full-time writing and drawing comic books for major publishers such as Marvel and DC Comics, working on books like Superman, Batman, and Spider-Man. I began my tutoring experience in the fall of 2009 with a program called Breakthrough Manchester. It serves underprivileged students in the area who do not have the resources to succeed. They ranged from grade 5 to 8. With Breakthrough I worked one-on-one with students as well as in a classroom setting in which I conducted my own lessons. A Little Bit About Me...

Math can be fun, especially when applied to exciting applications. For my work at NASA and the MITRE Corporation I use concepts from Calculus I-II almost everyday. Inspiring students to become excited about math and science is one of my life-long goals. Step by step visual diagrams can be effective tools for describing complex ideas.
