With a little work, you will get there!

I have struggled with the areas I am not proficient in, so I understand what it is to be frustrated and confused. My teaching style is presenting various approaches to the same idea, in hopes that at least one will click, and better yet, each approach with solidify an idea or concept that much more.
Being an undergraduate at WPI and haven taken several Advanced Placement classes in areas outside of math and science, I consider myself a very well rounded student. I was also strongly considered for a MASH program here at the University, or "Math and Science Help", as a Section Leader/Tutor. Going through a lower-middle class urban high school, I was known as that "smart kid" and would often led study groups outside of class to prepare for tests.

College Undergrad Looking to Tutor English Students

While I have never conducted a formal tutoring session, I have edited the work of my peers and more recently assisted my girlfriend's younger sister with the completion of her college essay. From my experience, I have found that I prefer to work one-on-one with the student whose work I am editing. That way, I am able to explain my revisions and help them understand my reasoning behind making certain edits. I'm not, by any means, a hard-nosed individual, but I'll certainly do my best to ensure that the student learns something.
Not only was English my favorite subject as well as the one I was most proficient in in high school, it eventually became my major in college. I majored in Journalism at The University of New Hampshire, and while I have not yet received my Bachelor's of Arts from the institution I am a mere handful of credits away from earning it (9, to be exact), an acco ... read more

My experiences during and after college have been crucial to realizing my skill and joy in tutoring and teaching. I was fortunate enough to attend a small, liberal arts college which allowed me to constantly experience small group learning environments. In addition, my first work experience out of college was an in intensive tutoring job in Boston, MA. I was placed with 5 students in the seventh grade and tutored full time in a middle school. We worked extensively on reading and writing skills. Currently I am a US history teacher in Arizona, but I am in CT for the summers.
I am a younger teacher, and it is important to me to do two things that a lot of instructors sometimes feel are mutually exclusive; develop a personal bond with my students and maintain a set of expectations for academic achievement. I am a witty, empathetic, and goofy person in my private life, and letting ... read more

I have degrees that require me to do a lot of reading and writing. My career has been composed of teaching, reading and writing, as well as literature, at the Universities of Vermont and Connecticut. The teaching included freshman through graduate students - all levels of writing, in short. Much of it took place during individual conferences.
So my teaching styles are varried. As a tutor, one on one, we would be engaged in a conversation. My part would be to discuss the sublect of concern to the student. The student would ask questions, and we would end the session with a forcast of the next.

Establishing a team setting reassures those I tutor that we will work together to achieve every goal we set. Because I have tutored students of all ages, I can easily identify what must be taught and how to teach it to meet a student's specific needs and learning style.

A Little Bit About Me...

After earning my B.F.A. from V.C.U. (magna cum laude) with double minors in art history and Italian, I moved to New York and worked in the creative, behind-the-scenes world of theatre and television. After six years of production work my husband and I moved to Rhode Island, whereupon I fell in love with teaching. For the past two years I have attended Providence College, working towards a post-baccalaureate degree in English Language Arts and secondary education certification. During my studies at P.C. I have maintained the same level of academic excellence as demonstrated in my undergraduate coursework. In addition to student-teaching full time in Woonsocket, RI, I also teach adult education classes in academic writing and college prep.

I student taught in an inner city school in South Providence and learned so much about life and diversity. If nothing else it taught me to recognize how unique and special each child is.
If I were to describe my teaching style in three words I would say firm, energetic, and enthusiastic. A Little Bit About Me...

In the classroom, I tried to achieve a comfortable atmosphere in which students might voice their opinions and raise questions about the texts at hand. While professionalism is important, I also firmly believe in maintaining an approachable relationship with my students; communication through email, individual conferencing, and work-shopping of papers are essential in helping struggling students with their writing. I have found that once a student’s ideas and imagination are joined with organizational skills and proper essay structure, anything is possible; however, students often need someone to coax these ideas out onto paper, or aid them in organizing these thoughts in a logical manner.
My passion for literature and writing led me to study English for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. This interest and enthusiasm for reading literary and academic texts transferred into ... read more
