A Little Bit About Me...

Along with my educational background I was a Girl Scout Troup leader for three years and a volunteer for the American Lung Association and American Heart Association. I enjoy working with kids and contacted Barbara Kline of the Utica School District and started working in the Tutoring program with her for four years. While in the tutoring program I assisted students from elementary school and highschool in reading and writing comprehension. I throughly enjoyed this work and would love the chance to do it again. There is nothing like seeing a child's face when they understand and accomplish something that they thought was literally impossible.
Once I am assigned a child I initally spend time going over a typical homework assignment to see where they are having some trouble. I get them to read out loud to me to see what their level of reading is. Some kids have problems soundin ... read more

I am very patient and encouraging; I believe children can learn anything if you make it fun for them. Getting them to employ good notetaking and study skills will help them to retain the information they are learning. I love working with children and believe that all children have the capacity to learn - but not every child learns i ... read more

I am a licensed CPA with over 20 years of experience in multiple industries. My professional experience in public accounting and auditing prepared me very well for working in private industry. I have numerous years experience in the insurance industry (Statuatory Accounting) followed by several years in hospital administration, physician group management and leadership development. All children are students; they can learn. The question is how best do they learn? I have used many differing styles from rote memorization through self-paced self-education. I encourage students to see the wonder and "mystery" (there really isn't any mystery) of Math, regardless of the level, in the real world. To that aid, I try to present real world problems at levels the student can understand. For lower level students, I investigate with them the development of the linear equations involved in setting up a relationship between two factors. A higher level student would solve multiple linear equations. A height vs. time linear relationship then can become quadratic, thus involving sports as an application.
My first career was as a Registered Professional Nurse (NYS licensure) for 25 years. During those years, I kept up my interest in various fields of math, such as Abs ... read more

As a recent college graduate, I have a fresh idea of what goes on in the mind of a student. I know that there are various techniques that work best for one student over another and an educator must be flexible in molding their teaching style towards these strengths. I have found in my classroom experiences that in order for students to reach their full potential they must have interactions with an educator who shows flexibility, enthusiasm, and an all around interest in the students success. I have a great enthusiasm for learning and spreading knowledge and I try to transfer this enthusiasm to all my students. I make every effort to ensure all my students learn in an environment where they can successfully work towards their learning goals.
