A Little Bit About Me...

Over the past year, I served as an Americorps volunteer in an inner city charter school with an emphasis on character education. I worked one on one with students helping them with math, reading, and science skills. I assisted in classroom teaching of mini lessons too. I also helped with their after-school program, I also created supplemental study guides and multimedia software to help students to improve their study skills. Tutoring has been rewarding, because it has increased my interest in the field of education. Subsequently, I am seeking certification in Biology 7-12th. I returned to school in 2007 to pursue a career in education. In several corporate positions, I was responsible for training new employees in various store operations. I have volunteered as a teacher in my church and taught Sunday School at the middle school level. During my courses and student teaching, I utilized many hands-on and inquiry-based tools to help students learn new concepts. In 2001, I graduated from IUP with a degree in elementary education. I substitute taught around the South Hills of Pittsburgh for a year, then moved to Virginia, where I taught fifth grade for four years. The first three years were in a public school and the fourth in a private school. I taught all subject areas and skill level abilities.
I would describe my teaching style as hands on and according to multiple learning styles. I understand that students learn best when they have the option of working with material objects. I also realize that students all learn in different ways and therefore I try to teach to each student's learning style. If a student doesn't understand it one way, I try to teach it another way so that he/she can learn it.

I believe that every child has the unalienable right to experience some success each and every day of their lives. My approach is hands-on, student centered and nurturing. I believe in learning by discovery and the use of manipulatives in a manner whereby the student learns without even knowing it.
