I have a passion for helping people, and nothing satifies me more than helping a person understand a concept and succeed in his or her class. I teach using a lot of examples and incorporating the concepts into the example problems so that the student can see how the examples are based on the concepts. I strive to know the students well so they don't just see me as a tutor but also as a friend who is easily approachable with questions.
I worked for over 2 years as a study session leader for various engineering courses while getting my B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. I have worked with children age 0 to 17 over the years. I tutored my daughters friends when she was in High School in History and some English especially literacy. My primary experience is with preschoolers but I have also been a day camp counselor for 3rd graders, a Girl scout Cadette leader and volunteered at the teen center.
I look at each student as an individual. I think it is important to determine which teaching style works for that person. I would use this information to choose the best method for each student. I think it is important to make learning fun at every age. Education should not be a chore but something to embrace. It would be one of my goals to limit fears or mental blocks that a student may have because they think they can't do it. I would focus on each students potential for success.

I was a community college English teacher for 12 years at Vista Community College in Berkeley, CA (now Berkeley City College). I taught in a special program tailored to working adults who had returned to school in order to earn their Associate of Arts degrees. This was not an academically confident population. They required enormous encouragement, personal attention, and coaching. I was very successful in this position because I was willing to talk with students on the phone, meet with them after class, and even respond to their essays at length on cassette tapes--my own idea!
