A Little Bit About Me...

I think it takes a lot for one teacher to reach all of types of students who are all at different levels of interest in the subject being taught as well as at different levels of understanding. However, I feel it is the teacher's responsibility to give them all equal opportunity to learn. It is not just about grades and assignments, that is just the means to an end, but it is about learning. In order for the students to learn, the teacher needs to be passionate about the students as well as the subject that is being taught. That will instill in the students a desire to learn and understand.
In having a science background, I have not only learned laboratory skills and reasoning skills, but I have learned how to increase efficiency, communicate in a clear manner, and write in a way that is direct and clear. I believe the key to academic success is ensuring the student feels a sense of accomplishment and pride in self. My method of teaching focuses on determining the best learning style and beginning with lessons that will bring about success, and then challenging the student gradually. I try to make learning fun, while encouraging questions and an "out-of-the-box" approach to problem solving. The ultimate goal is to develop an independent and motivated learner.
I currently work as a professional science/health writer, and I have a keen grasp of literature comprehension, grammar, and composition. I have tutored students in English, math, and science. Additionally, I have volunteered as a soccer coach, Sunday school teacher, and "Hands-On Science" instructor in the classroom. I previously taught private swimming lessons and piano lessons for children.
