My teaching philosophy has definitely evolved since my first teaching experience as a Teaching Assistant as a Masters Student at the University of Kentucky. I think I was very surprised to discover that teaching is not as easy as it looks, which is when I gained an appreciation for good teachers with effective teaching methods. My various teaching opportunities have led me to view education as a teaching-learning process whereby both me, as an instructor, and the student both strive for a higher level of awareness and understanding. Every time I teach a course I gain not only a deeper understanding of the subject matter, but also experience a unique teaching experience with each group of students. Considering all the differing teaching styles, my teaching style most resembles a combination of a gardener, a coach, and an entertainer. The gardener must tend to the different kinds of ... read more

Experienced Tutor with Expertise in Math and Social Science

I have been tutoring students of all ages since I was in high school. I began by tutoring my own peers in math and social studies. I would also tutor children from 1st grade on up in all subjects. Once in college, I tutored college students and younger in many fields, primarily mathematics courses. My specialty quickly became preparation for standardized tests as well as calculus because I have a unique ability to discover how each student learns and tailor the lessons to their needs. I can quickly find where the knowledge gaps exist for each student and fill in those gaps, in order to create a complete understanding of the topic, not just get them to memorize answers.
My teaching style varies for each student, I try to tailor the work to how the student learns.

Learning can be fun...if done the right way

Fun teaching methods. Reading simple books and signs for starters. Songs and learning the lyrics is a good and effective way to learn a new language
I lived my whole life in Damascus, Syria. Coming to the States every summer was very interesting for me, having the best of both worlds, my mother being from Kentucky, and my father syrian. Throughout my life, i never understood the value of being bilingual. Now i am very grateful for my upbringing and the education i was given. Arabic is a hard yet beautiful language, and one that will be spoken by all soon. I studied in the International school of Choueifat for 10 years, and for my senior year in high school, moved to a boarding school in Brummana,Lebanon. Sadly Arabic was not taught in that school, and thats when i came to appreciation with the language we all take for granted.

Disregarding my history, ethics, and religion expertise, my main reason for applying is my confidence in my capabilities to teach English. Basic parts of speech, syntax, grammar, organization, rhetoric, and multiple genres--from correct usage to specialized purposes (such as academic papers, business, text for oral delivery) have been mastered. In terms of mathematics, I taught GED, which covered most basic functions; however, I am a humanities person. My preferences are in the areas where I have spent most of my time.
Genuine, personal interest in the child; establishing rapport; establishing the student's mastery level, then building from there (instead of an arbitrary line which creates anxiety); affirmation of every step of progress/success; recognition but careful use of errors in non-judgmental, constructive correction; ease in backing up for review when needed; positive ... read more

I have a recent Bachelor's in Accounting, as well as 15+ years of accounting experience in both private and non-profit settings. While working at Thornhill Education Center, I had the opportunity to work with students and help teach GED classes. My main focus was math. I also had the opportunity to teach a level 1 accounting class for community education.
I don't think I have really developed a "unique style" by only teaching a year or so. I am a very patient person and I really like to see the "sparkle" in a students eye, when they truly understand something for the 1st time. I like to explain a concept and then give the student a problem and see if they get it. If not, I will go over as many times necessary...until they understand the material.

Most math and science classes are problem driven. As a tutor, I would go over home work problems assigned to the student. If this wasn't complete enough, I would allow the student to use some of the learning CD's I have on the subjects that are also problem driven. If the student is having trouble understanding concepts then I would try to create analogies relative to the student's environment.
I worked in the tutoring section of both East Tennessee State University and Southern State Community College. I did not major in the subjects which I listed (I minored in Chemistry), but I do have experience as tutor. At Southern State, I tutored basic math and Algebra Courses to adult students who had been out of school for several years. At East Tennessee State University, I tudored freshman in the subjects of Chemisty and Physics when I was a Senior. I refreshed my skills in Chemi ... read more

As a former academic scholarship student at Western Kentucky University, I have a keen understanding of what it takes to succeed at the highest level even under immense stress. Learning mathematics generally requires assistance from outside sources as it is not the easiest subject to understand. In the past, I tutored other college students with LDS in Math and German. I am very comfortable with all the major foundations of Chemistry including General, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. This includes both theoretical and lab work. I am also well versed in the English language, History, and Drama.
I work best with individuals who are self-motivated and determined to succeed. I am the kind of teacher who responds to questions with questions. I understand that a lot of students are just looking for a sufficient answer, but this will not help them understand the material when they are re ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe all students learn differently and what we need to reach all students is to find out how they learn best and find a way to reach them that they will prove to be successful in. There are a lot of ways to reach students and when you find that one perfect way it all clicks.
I have worked in after school programs tutoring children throughout my college career. Then after my college career I taught 3rd Grade at Peaks Mill Elementary School in Frankfort, KY. I have worked with students of all levels and had special needs students in my class. All my class work was differentiated to meet the needs of each student.
