After I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was a substitute teacher in IA for one year. I then worked, taught and advised at a small private college in Iowa. My first experience tutoring was in 8th grade when my 6th grade math teacher asked me to help some of his struggling students. I greatly enjoyed the experience and wanted to continue. I didn't get another chance to tutor until my freshman year of college. I volunteered to help a young man who could not take notes for himself. While tutoring in the Lake Superior learning center. I enjoyed tutoring the students. I would help the student break down the math problem step by step and explain the process. I would then sit with them and encouragement them to complete the next problem on their own. If they got stuck I would give assistance, through asking them questions or trying to help them remember the mathematical steps. If all else failed I would show them the process again, slowly and in a mater that would not discourage them.
