A child's imagination is my lesson plan

I start with a couple simple video games that teach the basics, and then we follow our imaginations from there. The best project ideas come from a kid's mind and it can take us in any direction. I don't follow a set lesson plan, but have plenty of projects up my sleeve if they're needed.
I've been fascinated with computer programming since I was 8 and found a book about Fortran in my grandma's encyclopedia set. Our school had a handful of computers but no programmers. There was a single book in the library that I had checked out constantly until the librarian finally just let me have it when I graduated 8th grade. I went to college and began to learn more and finally met the mentors that were so important to my journey. I have a degree in Computer Science and I've been employed as a programmer since 2002, including time in the US Air Force doing 3D flight sims and the medi ... read more

I have earned two BS degrees in Landscape Architecture and Computer Science with a minor in Math. this diverse education allows me to tutor in Math and Science as well as design and art. I have tutored part-time since 2004, mostly in high school Math, but have also assisted in Chemistry, CBEST, SAT, and GRE prep. I have also developed coursework and taught at UCSC in the classroom setting, and trained employees.
My first visit is just an assessment of where the student began to get lost regardless of the age or level. More often that not, they have to memorize their fractions to decimal to percentage conversion from 1/2 to 1/12. Given this underlying knowledge allows me to focus on the subject at hand. I usually recommend purchasing a Spark Notes or something similar for the subject as a ... read more

More About This Tutor...

For the past 10 years, I have worked in my community, helping to better the lives of children. At age 15, I began mentoring young girls and volunteering for a non-profit organization, counseling developmentally delayed children and at-risk youth. I later went on to become a Behavioral Therapist, educating children with autism. My love for children (and passion for education) was the determining factor in the course of my college career. I attained a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Utah in 2008 (graduating with a cumulative GPA of 3.8). In addition to my Psychology degree, I also hold a certificate in Human Factors Engineering and recently published research in this field.
As an educator, it is my job to recognize each child’s individual learning-style and adapt my teaching-style accordingly. I will build upon each child’s abilities and strengths, and work to improve upon ... read more

My idea of teaching is to first explain the topic and then show some examples. After this, I find it important to have the student show me that they understand the topic by them explaining it back to me. It is this cycle from showing to practice that helps reinforce the learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a Cal Poly graduate with a BS in Computer Science, I have had to master most math and computer science course material. My experience is teaching math to mostly older teens and young adults. In the professional world, I have trained all levels of employees on various computer systems (authoring, programming, operating systems, etc.). The training has taken the form of one-on-one, stand-up before a group, and creating online courses for "on your own" classes.
I believe that most subjects are not difficult to master. Most problems come from "under learning" the subject. Repetition may work for some subjects, but with math the student needs to understand WHY a process works. Once this is learned, the rest comes rather easily. When the student takes for granted a way to solve a problem, they are lost when the problem is presented in a different way. But, if the student ... read more

Knowledge and skills are most permanent when we discover and create for ourselves, so I like to be a guide that leads the student to their own conclusions, rather than take over and lecture. I will be there to direct and support the student; I like when the student works at the board or on the paper instead of me, so that they retain what is being taught. I am very patient, and will work with the student on a subject until it is truly understood, and for more algorithmic tasks, until the student can quickly produce the correct answer.
Tutoring my fellow classmates was an integral part of my college experience. At Yuba College, I tutored math and chemistry in the College Success Center for two school years. I was in demand, as even fellow tutors would seek my help. I was also requested by my physics professor to tutor physics in the Hard Math Cafe on campus. While at UCI, wher ... read more
