I love being able to teach someone something new. I love learning, but have always been a visual learner, so whether I'm teaching someone how to read, or simply helping them improve their reading skills, I introduce visual aids. The best teaching style in my opinion, explains how to research, plan and write essays, gives students time to practice these skills in class, and ensures students get feedback on how well they have done on each sub-skill. Students learn skills by using them in a realistic, subject-specific context, and in a combined way. So they might use other skills taught before such as note taking, highlighting, all in context. The purpose of the skills are stressed, students are taught not just what to do and how, but also why. The students then reflect on how well they used the skills, what gains they were getting and so on, and then they action plan for improvement.

In addition to academics, my students and I focus a lot on being good citizens, and having open/honest communication. I try to foster an environment that instills respect and understanding. In reading, we do both guided reading and book club units. This allows students to get individual skills, along with discussing full texts with one another. My students are very pationate about their writer's notebooks, and the writer's workshop program we have been focusing on this year (and years past). A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I was involved in girl scouts from first grade all the way to 12th grade and in those years I learned a lot of leadership skills. I am very patient and want to provide education to anyone that needs it. When I was in school I often struggled with school work, so I learned many different techniques to learn how to learn.
While I was an undergraduate, volunteering was very important to me. One of the places I volunteered was an after school program for children who live in Hamilton Hill. While I volunteered there I helped many of them with there homework as well as extra reading and writing to help improve those skills. I found that my psychology major as well as my education and english minors were very useful and helpful to help tutor in all subjects.
