My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Creative Writing--specifically poetry. Dozens of my poems have been published in print and online. I am a founding editor of The California Journal of Poetics for which I write, edit, and publish book reviews, interviews, essays, criticism, and other bits and pieces about poets and their writing. I have also taken several graduate level courses and workshops in the writing of novels, short stories, micro-fiction, and creative nonfiction. I have worked with some of the best writers in the world. I was the recipient of a creative writing scholarship and a creative writing fellowship during my undergraduate studies. Please note that my expertise lies in the writing of poetry and the analysis of poetry. I am not an expert in the history of poetry and poets, although I do have some experience in those areas.

My comments on tutoring Poetry : Poetry study units hold their own place of significance in any English or language Arts course for all grade levels. In addition to teaching poetry, I write it from time to time.

Focused Literary Tutor Will Make a Tangible Difference!

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention.
