My comments on tutoring Communications : Taught Communications 101 in San Quentin University to prisoners in the Prison University Project

I like to involve the students in exercises instead of passively instruct. I prefer to relate lessons to things that are happening in real life, or issues that conjure significant emotion or stimulate debate. Good creative writing is all about the ability to transfer strong feelings from the writer to the reader. To make them feel what you feel or felt.
I taught Communications 101 to 20 "lifers" at San Quentin Prison as part of the Prison University Project. Some of these men had not been in a classroom in 20 years. My comments on tutoring Communications : Having run an arts non-profit for 15 years, I have excellent Communications skills and knowledge, and editing expertise.

I assess the student's level of mastery by listening to parents, communicating with the student (in whatever appropriate way needed) and then doing some basic testing. Once the student is assessed, I design a learning environment and activities that coincide with the student's specific strengths, while adding some elements of challenge. I tend to work in a very focused way for 10-15 minutes, and then add in tactile activities (like Bannana Grams for example) for 10 minutes or so, in order to maintain the student's attention. Children and youth who are struggling to read and write get patient assistance to learn the words correctly.
