When I first work with a student, I like to get to know the method of teaching that they have already experienced from their math teacher. This allows me to know what sort of methods and teaching styles they student has already been exposed to and thus allow me to elimnate strategies that do not work. Being in sync with the student's teacher is very important. I work very hard to make sure that I am teaching them in a way that they can relate to. I understand how frustrating not being able to grasp something can be, so I make a great effort to be very patient. My goal in tutoring is to help the student enjoy mathematics as much as I have.

I teach with the assumption that everyone can learn anything. At the core of my teaching philosophy is the mental model or concept. Consequently, my first goal is to determine if the student has a mental model of the subject matter. If not, I will guide them in discovering a useful one using their existing models and their preferred input mode (tactile, visual, etc.). If a student does have a mental model then I will test its accuracy using the standard procedures approved and or recommended by the institution of enrollment. Further encounters are then simply for reinforcement until the student is confident.
