My teaching philosophy is to get students to think about science as a process, and to individualize their learning experiences. I prompt them to “why” and “how” questions at every stage.
Progressing through graduate school and working as a undergraduate student demonstrator allowed me to define learning as a personal process of growth. Being able to ask questions and actually attempt to answer those questions was extremely motivating. Involving and motivating students presents its challenges, but my goal of individualizing learning creates an open and comfortable environment where students can feel free to ask questions, make mistakes, and challenge themselves. It is by breaking down the barriers to learning that students can face their own misconceptions.

I usually follow the curriculum assigned. But I employ the socratic method as well as questioning each fact I teach. I also tie in clinical correlations to make it more interesting. I have found my students repond well to me and like me as a professor and I spend some time tutoring my students at CCAC (Community Colleghe of Allegheny County).
I have always been raised as a stellar student. The focus on education in my parents home was considered the only choice. I graduated top 10% of my high school class and went onto medical school overseas as I had moved back to Pakistan my native country. I than returned to the USA and passed the hardest test on the planet which is the ECFMG equivalency exams for doctors. I went into medical research after that and than teaching. I have been teaching for over a year at the CCAC college. I teach biology and antomy/physiology. I need summer emplo ... read more

As an undergraduate I formally tutored fellow students in several subjects, including biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics (from basic algebra to calculus). As a graduate student, I mentored several undergraduate students in the laboratory. Some of these experiences culminated in presentations of data at national and international scientific conferences. This trend continued when I became a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard, where undergraduates spent a summer in the laboratory learning about scientific exploration. During the past year I taught an undergraduate course (Brain and Behavior) at the University of Pittsburgh, which was a very rewarding experience. I look forward to the opportunity to help others achieve what they may have thought impossible, and providing them with the sense of confidence that comes from mastering material.

A Little Bit About Me...

I always believe that the student can learn just as much from, or even more from, each other. Not just from the teacher alone. Allowing students to share their own personal experiences, knowledge, interest, goals, and opinions in the classroom in a wonderful way for students to learn and grow, as well as for me. I have already experienced this from my field studies, student teaching, tutoring, instructional assisting, and volunteer work. I will strive to make my classroom fun, yet structured. I will exemplify my enthusiasm and love for teaching and learning with all subjects and activities.

My favorite area of biology is botany. I received an undergraduate degree in biology and a minor in botany. Additionally, I have two masters degrees, one in biology and one in teaching. Currently I teach general biology labs but I have taught freshman biology lecture as well. I have taught basic ecology to students in grades 3rd -6th grade in an environmental center as well as teaching non-major students basic botany. I am certified in K-12 environmental science and enjoy teaching because each class is different and every student unique.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

More About This Tutor...

I began tutoring while in high school, as a junior and senior I would spend 2-3 afternoons a week at the Middle School helping the learning support classes write book reports. While in college at Slippery Rock University, I put up flyers around campus and worked as an independent tutor for five dollars an hour aiding my fellow students finish their final papers at the end of each semester. I feel that my degree in Creative Writing aids me greatly in tutoring because my ability to think outside the box and put myself in the writers shoes helps me to better understand their writing style. I've recently moved to the city and I am really eager to begin teaching and tutoring again.
I prefer to work one on one with a single student, I do my very best to make my student feel comfortable and ready to learn. I learn what the student likes; music, sports, movies, I use these things to relate ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always loved to learn. In college, I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS in Biology. However, I made it a point to minor in Chemistry and Linguistics and to certify in American Sign Language. I have always had the desire to achieve the highest goals I could set for myself. While taking on the classes mentioned above, I learned great organizational skills and drive. I helped students at the University whenever they needed it. I started a tutoring program in my Calculus II class, and tutored students in this topic. I have also put in extensive time at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh. This has allowed me to tutor and assist ill children with missed homework assignments. Also, through the hospital I have learned to be sensitive to each child and each family. I also learned excellent planning and time distribution by planning many activity days, music sess ... read more

While I was in college I volunteered as a Young Life leader and worked with high school children. Right after college I joined Americorps. The program was for environmental education and we worked with all age groups. I have a passion for science and for learning. This is why I want to become a teacher and share my knowledge with others. I am laid back, patient, and a hard worker. I am a hands on type of learner and I understand that not everyone learns the same way. Therefore, I would do my best to understand how someone learns so I can best help them.
I have a B.S. in biology from West Virginia Wesleyan College. The college is a liberal arts school and I had to take a variety of course work aside from science classes. A Little Bit About Me...

I began my teaching experience at Ohio University where I was offered a position as an anatomy TA due to my success in the course. During this time I was required to make sure that 30+ students had a clear understanding of both lecture material and the lab material which included complete cat dissection. After I received my bachelors degree in science from Ohio University I went on to receive my Masters in Science from Chatham University in Pittsburgh PA. I did very well in both the physiology and anatomy classes and because of this was asked to become a tutor for both undergraduate and graduate students at Chatham. Every one of my students saw a significant rise in their performance.
I my experience in learning and teaching anatomy, which revolves around learning concepts as well as brute memorization, each student, has learned in his or her own unique way. Because of this I ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

There are 2 things that I’ve known since I was a child, I am fascinated by the study of biological mechanisms and I enjoy helping others. As an undergraduate at Allegheny College, I excelled in the biological sciences and was selected to be a teaching assistant for the Cellular Biology & Molecular Biology courses. Last spring I was asked to guest lecture at Central Catholic High School where I introduced the students to basic cancer biology. Most recently, I have taught a Microbiology course at CCAC. Although my formal PhD training is in biomedical research, I believe that the experiences described here have provided me the necessary framework for which to be a successful tutor and teacher.
My style of teaching is simple - make the information easy to understand. I believe that I possess a unique ability to modify complex scientific material into a more straightforward idea. The ... read more
