My comments on tutoring Dyslexia : Learning Disability

I have over 30 years experience with Special Education. From 2002 - 2011 I was lead teacher in a Comprehensive Developmental Classroom K-2. It was during that time in my search to be an effective teacher that I found Dr. Svetlana Masgutova PH.D. "MasgutovaMethod.com". As educators we are taught to only look at the brain as the source of intellect, that is, the cortex or higher order thinking part of the brain. My understanding now is that if there is a problem with protection and survival (brain stem) we have to correct that in first order because it is the ultimate foundation for higher order thinking. As we begin to address the infant reflexes, sensory system, hearing, sight, touch, smell, taste we begin to see better cognitive functioning, emotional regulation, physical coordination, social interaction, etc. improve. My mission is to facilitate and draw out the innate qualities in e ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked in an elementary public school since 1997. The majority of my experience has been in special education. I currently teach second grade. I hold a bachelor's degree and am able to teach any subject necessary in a general curriculum, although my specialty is working with children with disabilities.
I am patient and positive. I like to set goals for my students based on what they feel is important for them to learn and achieve.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have worked in the field of School Psychology for public schools in the state of Virginia. Most of my experience has been in rural areas where many different types of needs had to be handled by the Psychologist. Thus, I have had broad experience and training in the area of Special Education. I also worked in private practice and with other professionals which further broadened my skills. I retired in 2009 and moved to Tennessee to care for a family member. I miss contact with students, and feel I can help children who are struggling with school. I also feel that I can be of assistance to students identified as having special needs. I very much look forward to becoming involved with students of all types again!

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a born teacher, and come from a family full of them. For better or worse for those around me, I am always ready to help with research skills and writing, reading comprehension, assimilating mass amounts of information into a comprehensible format (with/for my coworkers and friends). I believe that anyone is capable of mastering standardized tests as well as any task thrown at them by the most grueling of professors. I believe in starting with the basic building blocks, making sure that those are mastered first, while allowing a student to create their own ideas and reach farther than the assignment dictates as they become ready. Everyone, children and young adults, can amaze themselves when given the right tools to accomplish an educational goal. It's not the students who succeed easily that make a lasting impression, but the ones who struggle mightily to get through a basic fi ... read more

More About This Tutor...

The past five years has provided me with an amazing amount of knowledge and experience. Completing a Master's degree in special education, teaching elementary students with disabilities, working as an adjunct professor and being the Director of Early College at Northwestern Technical College are just a few examples of those experiences. Each of these positions allowed me to grow and mature as a teacher. I have learned patience, creativity, knowledge and new skills from each of my past students. These experiences have also taught me how to better communicate with the students’ families and other educators in order to provide for each of their individual needs. Also, being certified k-12, I have learned a large amount of the Tennessee state curriculum in many different subject areas.

Due to my experience with a broad range of young learners, each working at a different academic and or cognitive pace, I follow a modified Socratic approach to both my classroom and one on one instruction by placing the emphasis on the student as we identify areas for growth. I then sculpt an academic program that we both/all have helped to design, thus accessing an invaluable font of enthusiasm and insight addressing how best to approach the needs of each individual student. This is especially true for those students who don't feel heard, suffer from academic performance anxiety or are struggling with the manner in which the material has previously been presented to them.
Over the course of the past 10 years I have spent time working with students struggling to develop their academic skills, particularly in the areas of language arts and the social studies. From my initial work as ... read more

My professional writing experience has has sharpened my ability to communicate and explain information in a variety of ways - a skill that comes in especially handy with students who need a fresh approach to tackling their struggles. I often hear students say, "Now I see - that makes perfect sense!" My professional writing experience includes three syndicated columns. With each new student, I start with getting to know the student as a person - not just for learning style purposes, but also for the student to understand that I am here for him/her. This helps avoid intimidation too, as a straight jump to students' academic challenges can sometimes get your sessions started on the wrong foot.
