I have tutored students in math and science (mainly math) for over 13 years. I have helped students in various levels of mathematics - basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. After working with me on a consistent basis (2/3 days/week) many of the students have received honors in their math courses, including "Most Improved" and "Highest Average". Setting realistic and obtainable goals with the student is a key factor to success. Measuring and documenting progress allows student, teacher, and family to see a visual record of growth. My teaching style is easy to describe; I consider myself a 'coach' and as such I don't (and wont) give the students the answer to a particular problem, but rather I show them how to (and hold their hand, metaphorically, while they struggle to) find the answers themselves based on first principles, in my experience the only way to get them to really learn. Learning physics is particularly difficult for most students because they have been trained to memorize, not reason things out logically. They usually require a LOT of coaching in order to begin to think, which ultimately is the goal of all physics class.
