I began tutoring as a volunteer with the America Reads program in high school. I continued volunteering with the Boys and Girls Club during college. After an opportunity to assist a professor in administering a freshman course, I applied to teach high school in Pasco County. I taught world history and psychology for one year before returning to school for my Master of Arts degree in History. I continued tutoring on the side, but spent most of my time assisting professors in the Department of History at Winthrop University as a Graduate Assistant where I edited exams and papers for undergraduate students. Personally, I am dyslexic and despite my learning differences I was able to attend law school and pass the South Carolina Bar exam. During my first year of teaching I was disappointed to learn how little time and energy is given to students who learn differently. My second year I choose to work at the John de la Howe School for at-risk youth and I loved every minute of that year: the school was designed to teach students with learning differences and behavioral issues.
