While I attended Auburn University and studied civil engineering I found myself enjoying group projects and helping other students get through the difficult curriculum. I needed some extra money my junior year of school and since I was enjoying working with other students I decided to try tutoring freshman and sophomore students in math and physics. I enjoyed it and it was rewarding when the students grasped the lesson at hand and did well on their upcoming tests.
I cannot say that I am set in any teaching style. I am green and haven’t exactly got a teaching style. I know through years of schooling and interacting with peers people learn differently and do better or worse depending on the teacher they have and that teachers style. After graduation, I accepted a position as an Adult Education Specialist; counseling and interacting with adults (18-65) returning to school for their GED's. I have worked in a variety of settings including open school, individualized, and classroom instruction. Some students need a more independent approach. I remember thinking years ago: "What will I ever use this for?" In tutoring my children, sometimes their friends, in addition to training my employees, I strive to create excitement by showing a need and an application for new information. I tend to retain information if I have a use for the knowledge, and believe others feel the same. I have earned a BS in civil engineering as well as an AS in general engineering along with my professional engineering license which has enabled me to gain a thorough grasp of many areas of math and science. I have taught many younger engineers the processes that were used company wide as well as how these specialized skills related to actual classroom situations and textbook references. I have also been a youth soccer coach teaching young children the skills and rules of soccer in a weekly coaching/game session.
