Language and Social Studies Tutor Now Accepting Students

I believe that anyone can learn. I approach history as a story (albeit a very detailed one) and languages as a skill set. I don't do rote memorization, but instead emphasize the patterns, causes, and effects of concepts. If you can begin to understand the why and the patterns behind concepts, the material becomes more meaningful and a lot of the need for rote memorization is removed. Mistakes are learning opportunities, and learning should be meaningful, not stressful. I take whatever approach necessary to give you the tools you need to succeed.
I have taught Spanish and ESL at the collegiate, upper/high, and middle school levels. I earned my B.A. in Spanish with a history minor from Baylor University in 3.5 years and graduated Magna cum Laude. I earned my M.A. in Spanish at Baylor University in May of 2010. I have tutored extensively both during and after my studies. I lo ... read more

Think. Research. Evaluate. Write. Polish. Skills for life

Coaching writers and assisting them in the critical thinking process necessary for research and writing is my passion. I have spent more than 20 years as a journalist, worked with college journalism students as an adviser and taught undergraduate journalism courses. Perhaps most importantly, I can help students understand that everything on the Internet is not actually research. Mastery of media is the essential skill of this information age. It will serve them for the rest of their lives.

Graduate Student-Tutor

I am a graduate student at Louisiana State University. I am working to obtain a master's degree in Social Work. Many may think that social work is far from teaching, but it is actually the same field. No, we may not serve in a classroom setting, but we do serve your communities through encouragement, hard-work and resources. For example, I have worked in Southern Lab's after school program, where I helped students with their homework and created interactive learning activities for the students. I've also had experience with tutoring family members.
I will be able to motivate your student through creative learning skills, while helping develop his/her critical thinking skills. I will able to help your student, by seeking to understand his/her learning technique and using that information to better serve the student. I've had the opportunity to work with students of all ages.

My teaching style is friendly and approachable. I find putting a student at ease in the beginning allows them to open up to me in order for us to both find out how he or she learns best, especially since I feel learning styles vary for each individual and often differs for some subjects. For example, I may want to use pictures and art to explore history versus reading and lecture type presentations.
I have taught both college and AP High School for college credit in the areas of Humainties, Religious Studies and English composition at three different institutions. Though I do well in large classroom settings, I prefer more personalized instruction settings. I think I would make an excellent tutor in the areas of English Composition and Literature and World History on both the high school and college level, and would likely do quite well to tutor high school French.

A Little Bit About Me...

With 2 BS degrees, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, I have been exposed to all of the most important fundamental disciplines that children need to be successful today. Math and science are my strong points, and I have much experience as a peer tutor throughout my collegiate and high school studies. I feel very comfortable teaching physics, chemistry, calculus and math in general. I have also volunteered my time to assist elementary school students with the language arts: i.e. sentence structure, spelling, grammar, etc.
In general, I like to assist the student visually and with real-life examples of how subjects such as chemistry, physics, and math can be applied to everyday life. My goal is to make learning fun not by lecturing, but encouraging the student to get involved and ask questions. Situations do arise when it is beneficial to lecture and let the student "soak up" k ... read more

My teaching style is best described as a balance between a healthy relational presence and an interesting conveyor of teaching and information. In other words, I combine "popular, upbeat, and friendly" with "engrossing, unique and interesting." Sensitivity's employed in that I notice the demeanor and countenance of the learner to help the student remain hopeful, optimistic and goal-setting, or at least goal-friendly. I have a liberality in terms of classifying students: some are on the "linear, forward moving, measurable" end of the spectrum, and some are on the "organic, unique, quiet and absorbing" end. I am confident that the world can't have one without the other, nor should!
My offerings are in writing and Speech Communication. After graduating from the University of Georgia, I attended a state accredited graduate school in Florida and Mississippi: Reformed Theological Se ... read more
