CHESS COACH AND PSYCHOLOGY TUTOR

When it comes to teaching chess, my top rule is for my students to have fun. If you're not enjoying the game, how could you possibly be expected to learn more about it? I like to level with my students and go at their pace. If you want to go fast, we can go fast. If you want to take it easy and take a more casual approach to learning the game, I offer that as well. I'm very outgoing, open-minded, and just as eager to learn as all of my students. I take pride in developing a great relationship with my students and their families.

Tutor for Several Elementary & College Courses

Extensive experience as both a college adjunct (at 6 different universities) as well as a tutor for various courses, with particular skill assisting students in overcoming exam-related stress and learning blocks. My experience includes teaching children (8 years old and above), as well as diverse college students, including student-athletes, and those with a learning disability/hearing disability. I hold three graduates degrees--it's fair to say that I am a life-long learner, which I try to instill in others.
Depending on the course and student, I vary my teaching style from the Socratic Method (with a lot of questions and answers between the student and me), as well as utilizing real world examples to reinforce concepts. Finally, I strive to move from the basics of a concept, to intermediate types of problems, and build to advanced level. By doing so, I focus on the student's ... read more

During the ups and downs of my undergraduate career, I became self-aware of the challenges that a student faces, especially within subjects that are not his/her strong suits. I believe the best approach is one where self-motivation from within is encouraged, as any subject is difficult without the right motivation. To identify the right motivation, as a tutor back in 2001, I took time to discuss with the students their interests and goals. By understanding them on this personal level, I felt it was easier to connect with them and make them realize that their success was of great importance to me.

I am an example that having the right guidance at an early age can really make a difference. I was accelerated from level 4 to 5 based on academic proficiency, and was granted a scholarship to the most prestigious math and science high school in the Philippines, which gave me a very good foundation in math and sciences, and that knowledge made my transition into university very easy. I was then admitted to the top performing university (UP) in the Philippines, and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering at the age of 20. For the last 5 years, I have been doing volunteer tutoring in Math for children in middle school and for those who are reviewing for high school and university entrance examinations .
I love working with children. I can easily build a rapport with kids, making them more comfortable because I believe that learning should also be fun and enjoyable. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

In the job I had where I mentored kids, it was a program called Lil Kickers. This program was for kids 3-10 years old where they were taught how to listen to instructions and communicate with one another. This was mixed in with games that helped their motor skills and ultimately helped them with their soccer skills. I have learned it is very important to be enthusiastic and passionate with the kids.
As a recent college graduate, I know how to work hard. I earned a bachelor degree, BS in Marine Biology from UC Santa Cruz, where I took many science and math classes. I do not have any experience in tutoring, but I have been a mentor to kids in other jobs I have had.

My bachelor's degree in English serves as an example for the effort and time committed to education and a service to academia. I learned literary skills concerning literary forms: folklore, poetry, short story, photography, personal essay, analytical essay. My two years of high school Spanish, one year of College French, and completion of breadth college requirements provide a slight ability for me to tutor Spanish and French language, computer navigation, basic algebraic math, and basic social studies. During the last three years I tutored ESL, reading, and Astronomy at Chaffey College, overlooked K-12 after-school P.E. programs with the Boys and Girls Club, and facilitated a course in wheelchair basketball and disability at UC Berkeley.

A Little Bit About Me...

Students learn best when they feel vested in the process of learning and excited about the journey; it is always my goal to convey my passion for the learning experience and my partnership with the student in that process. I am a firm believer in active learning and thus avoid rote memorization exercises and merely showing students how to do something. I help them to wrestle with the materials, to look at concepts from every possible angle, and to learn the importance of synthesizing information and determining what is wheat and what is chaff. I am patient and friendly with my students, but my focus is always on preparing them as learners.
As a teacher and tutor for over 27 years, I have had the pleasure of helping students explore their potential, find their passion, and excel in their learning experiences. I have been the Editor-in-Chief of several journals, and have written more ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent graduate from the University of California Riverside, I have earned a bachelors of science degree from the institution. During my time at UCR I developed a passion for the sciences which was taught by dedicated professors who served as my mentors. After being exposed to many professors who have a passion for teaching, I want to also give back to the community in this way.
I really like working with all sorts of people. There is no satisfaction greater than when I can see the spark in a person's eye when they comprehend materials they had not before. Everyone can learn any material they set their mind to if they have the motivation and the proper learning environment, and of course the right teacher. It is my desire to be a great teacher, educator, and mentor.
