Life Science is one of my top subjects!

I am a retired teacher who taught various science courses for 25 years in the Jefferson Parish Public School System. Over the years I have taught biology, chemistry, earth science, physical science, and even pre-algebra. I have a proven track record of results in science education. Many of my students have gone on to have excellent careers as doctors, nurses, dentists, and other science-related disciplines. Also, I can speak a little Spanish although I do not consider myself bilingual.
I feel the best way to teach is to put yourself in the student's place. I realize that most science material is totally new to the student so the teacher must not assume that the student just "knows these things." You have to start from square one and explain the concepts thoroughly. The teacher should never move on to a new concept until the student has mastered the previous concept.

A Little Bit About Me...

Because I am a very patient and detail oriented person, I feel it is best to adapt my teaching style to the student's learning style. I would first make that evaluation to determine how best to approach teaching the student. I enjoy using hands-on examples and Powerpoint presentations in teaching. I feel that one-on-one interaction will always help a child gain knowledge of a subject.
I have a BS in Environmental Science with a Chemistry minor. I also have a MS in Environmental/Soil Science. I graduated with my undergraduate degree in marine biology in 2002 and then worked as a research biologist for two and a half years before returning to school to pursue my master’s degree. I believe that my hands-on scientific experiences combined with my academic background allow me to convey difficult concepts to students. As a researcher and as a student, I have had to put together many written and oral proposals and presentations, so I have the ability to communicate ideas very effectively. Each semester of my graduate school, I taught two science labs to non-science majors.
