I try to take a hands-on approach to teaching when possible. I find it helpful to use varied and often unusual objects and materials when teaching a lesson; it tends to make the material more memorable. However I am not above using the standard pencil/paper/textbook approach when needed.
I consider myself to be a "beginner" teacher as I have recently graduated college and received my license. I have spent roughly 500 hours in the field as a result of college course requirements, and I have successfully completed a 12 week internship (student teaching) experience. I graduated from Ohio University in 1978 with a BS in Education. I went on to earn a Masters degree in Educational Administration. I hold two valid permanent teaching certificates and a professional license. I have been fortunate to have taught all grades and all subjects with the exception of 1st, 3rd, and 4th. I have also had the pleasure of being an ABLE instructor for adults. I am currently teaching high school, however have been offered a 4th grade position in math and science. I had access to 2 long-term teaching positions. The first was for high school special education in history and the second was for 8th grade language arts. During my years at The Ohio State University, I earned a B.A. in Psychology, and completed a year and a half of Masters work in Social Work. After completing my B.A., I was hired as a professional tutor. I tutored college students in various subjects including English and essay writing, Psychology, Reading, some Spanish, and Social Studies.
I love working with children, and feel that I can relate to them because I struggled in my early school years. In the year of 2004, I began substitute teaching for public schools such as North Fork, Licking Valley, Heath and Granville. In the year of 2008, I began going to the country of India to teach English to students who were nationals as well as from the countries of Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Some of these students were already fluent while others could not speak any English. Within three months, they were able to read, write and speak English. I also had the opportunity to teach in a public school while I was there. In each classroom there were anywhere from eighty to one hundred children. I taught them the English alphabet, reading, writing as well as basic understanding and dialogue.

I beleive that patience and kindness are a key factor of working with students. As students are attempting to master content that is difficult, the teacher should demonstrate encouragement and patience. I also believe students learn in different manners. Therefore, if a student is not comprehending the information in the traditional manner, then a different approach is necessary.
