My comments on tutoring Special Education : Seven years of teaching experience in kindergarten through eighth grade classrooms teaching students with special education needs.

Interactive to show students how learning can be fun. I typically include a game in sometime I'm doing, to either grasp their attention or give them something to look forward to, or a little of both.
A wide variety of educational experiences as a teacher, from international schools in Scandanavia to a one room schoolhouse in rural southeastern Montana. I taught 5th grade for 3 years, right out of college, then began substitute-teaching k-12 and have been doing that for the past 5 years. As a volunteer, I have enjoyed teaching children with learning disabilities. I believe I can make a difference as a tutor. For example, one day I overheard my son's Kindergarten teacher say she would have to hold back one of the students from entering first grade because the child could not count to ten or say the alphabet. I asked this teacher if I could be a volunteer tutor for this child an hour once a week over the remaining three months of the school year to see if I could help turn the situation around. One of my proudest moments came shortly after the tutoring period ended in which the Kindergarten teacher announced she would be able to enter this child into first grade along with the rest of his classmates!

As a Michigan resident, I was unable to find sny substantial work in the fiels of Social Work once I earned my BA degree. So, I worked in 3-4 school districts over a two year period before gaining full time work with the State. Eventually, in 2006 I lost my position with the state and again returned to substitute teaching. I enjoy young poeple and giving them a strong dose of encouragement even in brief one-day encounters.
