I am a person that does not rest on her laurels. I am always striving to learn new things and have new experiences. I have 11 years teaching experience with Garden City Public Schools in a variety of subjects and elementary grades. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Science, a teaching certificate and a Master's Degree in Teaching and Learning. I have the knowledge and experience that it takes to help others achieve their life goals.
My teaching style is one of kindness and candor. I also believe that as a teacher, one has to command the audience they are teaching to in order for learning to take place. I have a lot of experience with children of several backgrounds and learning styles. I believe that one person can make the difference in the life of another person.

I have high expectations of students, but I adjust my "teaching style" to the student. For the struggling student, I usually begin at a level that they can easily perform. From that platform, we progress step-by-step until we find the area of difficulty and why it is there. When we master that, we move on. There are a variety of techniques to use, depending on the problem and the student, but the general expectation is that they can do it.
Although my degree is in music education, most of my teaching was done in Christian schools. I have taught math (through Algebra II), English, grammar, history, and science. I would be proficient in any math through Algebra I and any English, grammar or history through grades 12. I have taught grades 3-12.

I love people's capacity for learning. It gives me joy to know that I have helped another learn something new. I am patient, relaxed, and try to keep tutoring interesting for the recipient. It's important that the tutoree is engaged and enjoys grasping new lessons. I like to guide students into understanding the problem rather than just merely giving them the answer.
In 2006 I graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Engineering Science. It gave me an understanding in a broad range of mathematical areas as well as areas of other sciences. During that time I worked with volunteer organizations like Salem Housing and Habitat for humanity for three years, which enabled me to mentor a variety of ages. In the last year I've worked with a homeschooling group on a project called, "Leaping Lizards."

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style may vary depending on the student. I would have to get a feel of what the child like and dislike about the subject he or she is struggling in. I would also want to obtain a list of goals or expectations from the student's parents in order to implement a plan that will aid both the student and I to accomplish the targeted goal. I will implement interesting ways to make the subject fun so that the student can build confidence and enjoy the learning process.
I enjoy teaching others and helping them excel in their studies. I can relate to younger students because I have a six year old who required extensive help in the area of reading. She was one of my greatest achievements because I had to research a way to communicate on her level of understanding and yet make it interesting and fun. Now instead reading being a weakness it is a strength for her because she has exc ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I recently have spent the last six months in the Head Start Program as a center teacher. We prepare them for kindergarten. I have taught all grade levels. I currently have a BA with a concentration in K-8 education. Due to online classes, I have written hundreds of research and essay papers using APA style although I have helped my son use MLA which I can write in effectively.
Teaching mainly K-8 on a consistent schedule, I have learned that some students need one-on-one teaching. Being the third teacher in Head Start, I had time to work with individual students. All children were very well prepared for kindergarten. The older children, including High School and Middle School, I would walk around the room and aide them when they were confused. I also had them read the text orally taking turns and we would do the work sheet to prepare for quiz, test or new chapter. I am very pat ... read more

I went to school at EMU with the intention of getting a doctorate in Physics, to teach at the college level. I ended up getting a job in IT at the University, and found I enjoy this just as much. While a student, I volunteer tutored for the Society of Physics Students, and I tutor all the student employees I have when they are taking physics classes. I love teaching, and the students that I have tutored have excelled under my supervision.
I try my best to make the student figure things out on their own, by giving simple guiding questions or comments. I do not like to simply do the problems for them, as I find most people do not learn well this way. I am patient and empathetic, and I understand what it is like to approach a problem from the position of a student who is confused or unsure. I try to give them the tools to understand basic problem solving and critical thinking.

A Little Bit About Me...

Growing up in a family that did not value an education, I saw education as a way to make a better life for my self than gangs, drugs, and violence. I am the only one in my family to graduate from high school, then college. I firmly believe that education makes a person better by pursuing it. I achieved an Associates in Science, then two Bachelors of Science degrees. In addition, I earned various certifications in Environmental Health due to my job experiences. I have tutored many science classes, math, algebra, history, archery, martial arts, outdoor survival techniques and wildlife studies. I have also tutored students in the art of playing musical instruments.
I am an essentialist in philosophy, meaning I want the student(s) to learn material that is relevant to their experiences and that they can find useful to their lives. I want to engage them in their learning so that ... read more

Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I know that much of my success has been a result of learning from great dynamic teachers who really cared about me as a student and as a person. I believe that teaching is done best by adapting to the student, finding common ground, and then relating that connection to the topic in question. I would love to help your student find these connections and learn to be enjoy the process of education and achievement.
I have a BA in History from UM, which, of course, entailed not just learning and researching history, but also tremendous amounts of writing papers on a myriad of topics. I am currently a law student at Wayne State, and so am also well versed in legal and social issues, as well as, once again, lots of writing and grammar. I also have a background teaching and tutoring 100's of students how to prepare for the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I tutored with the Writing Fellows every Thursday at Schoolcraft College when I was working towards my Associate's in Liberal Arts. I helped students write and edit their papers. The primary focus was English but there were a few Social Studies/History students thrown in there. I graduated in April 2009 from Eastern Michigan University with my Bachelor's Degree in Electronic Media and Film with a Minor in Creative Writing.
I would usually look the paper over and point out problems with grammar and spelling and tell the student why they weren't working. I believe in the mantra "show, don't tell" when it comes to teaching. I'm pretty laid back and willing to work at whatever pace the student is comfortable with. I don't move on until I feel both of us are on the same page. I think the history of the English language has a lot of really interesting trivia.

My career as an educator began when I started tutoring during high school. At a tutoring agency, I provided personal and small group tutoring for children ages 4-15 in math and reading. When I decided to pursue a degree in education, I gained experience by volunteering at summer school programs. I worked with diverse groups of children in first and fourth grade, in all subject areas. While completing my education courses, I student taught in suburban and semi-urban schools. Through my experiences, I learned how to approach one subject from many different angles in order to best suit the learner. I taught kindergarten, second and third grade in all subject areas. Within my elementary education degree, I specialized in mathematics and social studies, and thus have a strong understanding of teaching concepts in both areas. I'm also certified to teach math and social studies at the middle ... read more

It is my philosophy that all students want to learn and express their intellectual selves. First, a rapport is crucial. Students will work hardest for teachers who care about them. It is my pride to be known as a funny, intelligent, approachable, caring teacher and tutor while enjoying a reputation as a notorious academic hardcase. As I tell all of my students, quoting legendary baseball coach John McGraw: "The object of the game is to win." Learning builds confidence and self-reliance, which, in turn, leads to a desire to learn more. Learning is the most addictive substance known to man.
Having graduated from the University of Michigan(GPA 3.863) and received endorsements in English and History that make me a highly qualified teacher in these areas per NCLB standards, I feel I have a lot to offer. I have a high regard for the brilliance of children. It is my experience that some children need assistance in recognizing their gifts. I have had a chance to see many intellects blossom and self esteems thrive. Using techniques learned from various levels of education classes teamed with experience, I am able to connect and allow learning to happen. I find great satisfaction in helping enhance the quality of education in the lives of children.
Teaching children has been part of my life for many years, on many levels. I am currently a full time substitute teacher for Ann Arbor Public Schools.
